SOCIAL STUDIES
The study of Canadian Government begins with an exploration of democracy.
Students are exposed to various functions of the government at all three
levels. We will then explore the election process via worksheets
and CD Rom before holding a mock election.
COMPUTERS
In computers we will be doing internet and CD research. The internet
Websearch is intended to direct students to the proper areas of the internet
in order to access specific information.

| MATHEMATICS
Algebra - Students will be expected to solve problems
with one and two variables using basic addition and multiplication skills.
They will further be expected to be able to explain and write the rule
for algebraic relationships.
Numeration - Multiplication of two digit by two
digit numbers will be completed. Division of a four digit number
by a one digit number will also be begun.
Probability - Students will explore the role of
probability in making decisions. Games will be the major focus.
Students will design and construct a board game of their own demonstrating
an understanding of odds and probability.

| READING
The reading program for this term consists of
independent reading at home and at school. The students are expected
to document their readings in a log book and complete a reading response
from a list of responses given to them at the beginning of the year.
Responses should be at least one page in length.
As well, I will be reading with each child individually
this term and attempting to assess each student's level of reading in order
to personalize their program. |
| WRITING
Personal and Business Letters will be the writing
focus during the study of Government. The basic structure will be
taken from the First Steps Program. The students will be introduced
to an outline for each type of letter based on a computerized template.
We will then write letters to various people and government agencies, all
the while focusing on letter framework and creative wording. |
| SPELLING
The spelling program is an individual program
in which the spelling words for each student are taken from their daily
journal. Two other attempts are made to spell the word, and then
it is looked up and added to a personal dictionary.
Lists 18-25 from the Canadian Spelling Program
2.1 will be completed and tested during this period of time. |
ASSESSMENT
Students will be marked on the accurate completion
of their websearch on Canadian government. They will also get a mark
on their ability to demonstrate awareness of the electoral process through
mock elections held in class. |
