Homework and Communication Book
The new curriculum requires that
all children do some homework and a mark be given on each report.
Homework can assist children’s learning It is useful when:
-
it gives children the chance to consolidate
what they have learned at school
-
it allows for the fact that children
learn and work at different rates and have different needs
-
it increases children’s confidence
and enjoyment in learning
-
it gives parents opportunities to encourage,
express approval and, in general, relate positively to their children
-
it develops productive long-term habits
of learning and planning
The school will endeavor to
keep you apprised of your child’s progress by means of a Homework/Communication
Book which should come home daily, and must be signed daily.
When you see this book, please comment on what has been written, and let
me know what is happening at home as well.
Suggestions
What follows is a list of suggestions
which should enhance the reading and writing program your child is receiving
at school.
-
Read to your child and have them read
to you.
-
Set aside a special time and place
for reading.
-
Ensure there is a comfortable spot
where reading can be enjoyed.
-
Allow your child to progress at their
own pace.
-
Encourage reading and writing in every
aspect of daily life. Model for your child that you get pleasure and information
from reading and writing.
-
Visit and share in use of your
local library.
-
Provide reading materials which you
know your child will enjoy.
-
Encourage your child to compose letters
or write in a journal/diary.
-
Read the same literature as your child
so you can discuss the reading informally or formally.
-
Limit time spent viewing television.
This sharing of time and communication
will hopefully develop into a regular activity that you both can enjoy
and benefit from. If you would like more information or recommendations
for materials, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher
