ACS, SJC set to clash in final

By Tom Kennedy
Friday November

Assumption College Lions coach Kelly Ireland believes a close call against the Brantford Collegiate Institute Mustangs in last week’s semifinal was a wake-up call for his team.  The Lions, who went into the game undefeated, narrowly defeated the Mustangs 12-7 to advance to this weekend’s senior football championship. Ireland said the result should provide his players with some focus.

“I really don’t think we played well enough to take anybody lightly after our semifinal game,” Ireland said. “We’re going to have to play our best game of the year to win on Saturday.”

The Lions won the semifinal last Friday to earn the right to defend their 2010 championship. Their final opponents, the St. John’s College Green Eagles, put the Pauline Johnson Collegiate Thunderbirds away with an impressive 20-7 victory.  As the Lions look to defend their title and claim the second senior football championship in the school’s history, Ireland does not want to see a repeat of last week, when some players were already picturing their place in the championship game.

“A lot of kids admitted to me that they overlooked that game,” Ireland said. “We were lucky to win. I think Friday night brought them back down to Earth that we’re not going to walk through this league.”

The Green Eagles waltzed through their semifinal. St. John’s led the Thunderbirds 13-0 after two quarters. At one stage in the game, they led the T-Birds 20-0 and it looked as if they may earn a shutout. A late touchdown pass put PJ on the scoreboard.  A key player for the Lions to consider if they are to retain the title is Green Eagles running back Tyler Hinds. His pace alone will keep the Lions defence on its toes, not to mention his agility.

“He’s as good side to side as he is north to south,” Ireland said. “We’re going to have to contain him.”

Ireland admits the Green Eagles have a diverse offence and knows St. John’s running game can leave teams behind. He will be calling upon experienced defensive leaders Tyson Leeb and Josh Tait to shut it down.

“They’re going to be called upon to shut down this key running game of St. John’s,” Ireland said. “They’re our guys to stop things getting outside. They’re really going to have to shut down Tyler.

“We’re going to have to minimize the key plays. Our kids tend to build a rivalry with St. John’s, so we really get up to play them. We don’t have to worry about the emotional aspect, it’s just about playing good football.”

In junior football action, the Lions defeated the North Park Collegiate Trojans 31-7 to set up a championship game against the Brantford Collegiate Institute Colts, who defeated the SJC Green Eagles 35-0 last Thursday to advance.

The senior football championship takes place Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre football field. The junior final follows the seniors at 3 p.m.
