Volunteer/Community Service
All students are reminded that 40 hours of community involvement is a
requirement for their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
Be sure to get the paperwork filled in and submitted to the main
office when you participate in an activity. The forms are available
here or
in the Guidance Office.
Check the bulletin board outside the guidance office regularly for new
volunteering opportunities.
Eligible Activities
- School Programs Helping out with a non-credit extra curricular
activity such as: student governance, organizing school activities
(i.e. sports meets, music production) and assisting in school
activities (i.e. ushering at parents night).
- Fundraising Canvassing, walk-a-thons, gift wrapping, gala events
and sales.
- Sports/Recreation Coaching, track meet organization, working
with a buddy, pool assistant, and organizing Special Olympics.
- Community Helping organize winter carnivals, parades and summer
fairs.
- Community Projects Participating in food drives, support
services for community groups.
- Environmental Projects Participating in community clean-up,
flower/tree planting, recycling and beautification activities.
- Religious Activities Programming for children, child-minding,
helping with Sunday School, special events and clerical tasks.
- Seniors Program Assisting in Seniors Residence or Seniors
community programming.
- Office and Clerical Reception, computer work, and mailings for
volunteer/not-for-profit agencies
- Youth Program Helping to run youth programs such as 4H, Scouts
or Guides, drop-in centres, breakfast, after school and March Break
programs, Leaders in Training , Summer playground activities and
camps.
- Work with Animals Working with animal care, horseback riding
programs or work at a local zoo or petting farm or SPCA. SPCA
application form is available online.
- Arts and Culture Assisting at a gallery, performing music or
involvement in a library program.
- Activities for Individuals Assisting seniors shop, read, prepare
letters, shovel snow, chronic care hospital visits, transcribing,
reading buddies and respite care. The Brantford General Hospital has
information and an application for volunteering applications at
their website.
Ineligible Activities
- activities that displace paid workers.
- activities where you are normally paid (ie. babysitting).
- Take Our Kids to Work Day.
- experiential learning (job shadow, work experience, co-operative
education).
- required activities of a course where you earn a credit.
- playing on a school sport team.
- regular family responsibilities.
- court ordered community service programs, alternative measure
programs or any diversionary program that uses community service.
- activities involving the operation of a vehicle, power tools or
scaffolding.
- activities where you might administer medication or medical
procedure.
- any student under 16 involved in a logging environment.
- any student under 15 involved in a factory environment.
- any student under 14 involved in any working environment (except
health and residential care environments).
- activities involving banking, securities or other valuables.
- activities that take place during allotted for instructional
program on a school day.
- any activity that provides direct financial revenue or gain to
the student or to the student's immediate family.

After completing the form, bring it to the BCI Student Services office
during school hours (along with the fee) or mail the completed form
(with the fee - do not mail cash) to;

a recent graduate (more than 10 years have passed since graduation) you

Grand Erie District School Board.
Please note: if you graduated more than 10 years ago your records
have been archived and are no longer available at the school.
