GRADE 9
GLS1O - Learning Strategies: Skills for Success in High School, Open
This course introduces students to learning theories and strategies, prepares
them to become effective independent learners, and helps them increase their
personal management skills, both in school and in other contexts. Students will
learn how to use reflective thinking, structured inquiry, active reading,
memorization, goal-setting strategies, and time-and-stress-management skills
to identify and work towards their goals. This course will also help students
identify their preferred ways of learning and use this knowledge to increase
their confidence, motivation, and ability to learn. This course is available
to students who have demonstrated significant difficulties in learning during
their elementary school years. Recommendation from the IPRC process and the
Grade 8 teacher and principal will be important criteria.
GRADE 10
GLC205 Career Studies - Half Credit Course
This course teaches students how to develop and achieve personal goals
in education and work and contribute to their communities. Student learning will
include assessing their own knowledge, skills, and
characteristics and investigating economic trends, workplace organization,
work opportunities, and ways to search for work. The course explores post
secondary learning options, prepares students for community based learning,
and helps them build the capabilities needed for managing work and life transitions. Students
will design action plans for pursuing their goals. Prerequisite: None
GRADE 11
GPP3O - Leadership and Peer Support, Open
This course prepares and motivates students to provide leadership and assistance to others in their schools and communities. Students will develop skills in communication, interpersonal relations, coaching, leadership, teamwork and conflict management, and apply them in roles such as tutoring, mentoring, and student council involvement. Students also learn the value and complexity of social diversity, while acquiring an appreciation of the importance of contributing to their communities and helping others throughout their lives.
