Course Description:

Co-operative education (more commonly known as co-op) is a type of experiential learning course in which students gain work experience in the community for 2 credits. Each 2 credit work placement is an extension of an in-school senior credit (known as the related course) that the student has already earned or is currently achieving. Students are required to complete at least 220 hours of workplace time, which includes in-school pre-employment orientation sessions and 6 integration sessions, in order to earn the double credit.

Weighting of Achievement Categories

The Grand Erie District School  Board values balanced assessment and evaluation. With input from the Ontario Co-operative Educators’ Association and the GEDSB, the Co-operative Education Department of Dunnville Secondary School has developed the following weighting regarding the emphasis on each category of learning. In the term work for this course, each category will be emphasized in the following manner:

Other Information:
Throughout the semester, the teacher will monitor students at their workplace. Monitoring visits will be unannounced.

The First Report Card
The first report will indicate your progress to date based on the four achievement chart categories.  It will also indicate your performance in the Learning Skills.  Your teacher will provide a three part comment regarding your progress. The first comment will address your strengths;  the second, your areas for improvement; the third will highlight next steps.

Your Final Grade:
A final grade will be recorded in this course, and a credit will be granted and recorded if your final grade is 50% or higher.  Your final grade will be determined as follows:

grade will reflect your most consistent level of achievement throughout the course.

 

Reporting on Learning Skills
The provincial report card provides a record of the learning skills you demonstrated in this course under the following categories: Works Independently, Teamwork, Organization, Work Habits, and Initiative.  Your performance in each of these skills will be reported separately except in cases where a specific learning skill is one of the expectations of the course.  It should be noted that better achievement of the Learning Skills often corresponds to better academic achievement.
