2008
We have made it through the winter months!! We welcome with much excitement and anticipation the warmer months of spring. As the warmer months are upon us and students begin wearing sandals more frequently, we ask that parents remember to send their children to school wearing sandals that have an ankle strap. Each year we experience a considerable number of accidents on the playground and on the stairs due to students running and playing in flip flops. Please also remember that students continue to require proper footwear in order to participate in Phys Ed. Please feel free to continue to leave gym shoes at school throughout the remainder of the year. Thank you for helping us to ensure the safety of our students! Thank you to the Parent Council for arranging for our Quincy Mack presentation! Quincy delivered a very energetic and positive message about dealing with bullies and maintaining a positive self image and self esteem. We would all do well to remember his thoughts; when we begin to feel low about ourselves, we should bring ourselves back up by focussing on our strengths and learning something new! (His cool tricks with a basketball were also quite amazing and highly entertaining!) May brings with it a new experience for the Grade 1s.... Our very first Rock Concert! On May 8th the Grade 1s will be attending the Gregg Lerock concert at Branlyn school. We have been listening to Gregg’s CDs in class so that we are ready to rock on May 8th! If you haven’t already done so, please return the permission form and payments as soon as possible. If you need another letter please send me a note in the agenda. As always, if you have any questions you can reach me at the school. Please remember my new email address is christina.macoretta@granderie.ca. Sincerely, Mlle C. Macoretta Curriculum Français May is assessment month. Each student will be completing an Alpha Jeunes reading assessment which will be kept on file. This information is used to monitor reading comprehension and progress, as well as to provide the next year’s teacher with a starting point for targeted reading instruction. I will be conferencing with one student each day to perform the assessment during our Independent Reading time. In late April we began a new at home reading program. I am assigning different books to each student based on their reading level; these are books with which the students should have proficiency. I will change the books each week so please remember to return the book bags on Wednesday! In May we will spend a significant amount of time on our writing as we work through our Time Line project. Students will practice narrative writing as they write captions to describe people, places, and events in photographs of their choosing (please see attached). Math We seem to have a number of students in our class who are natural bankers! We have completed our study of money but will maintain practice of these skills through our ‘store.’ Students accumulate points throughout the week. Each Friday they cash in their points for money, which they log in their ‘bank book.’ At this point, they can choose to purchase an item from Mlle’s Magasin, donate their money to the classroom fund, or save their money. If they make a purchase, they must log this in their bank book as a withdrawal. Once our classroom fund reaches 5$, Mlle will buy popcorn for the class and we will watch a movie together! We now turn our attention to an introduction to algebra. We begin with an extensive use of pictures and manipulatives before working with numbers. We will be examining expressions of equality (ie. 3+4=5+2) and we will actually begin solving for x. You will be amazed at what we will be able to do! We will also be examining the concepts ‘greater than / less than.’ Science / Social Studies I n April we close our look at Energy and its uses in our daily lives. The students have done much work around theVisual Arts Much of our work for the next two months will be Top Secret... Moms and Dads will find out soon enough! I have scheduled our Horizon Line walk for the end of the month. Please watch for more details to come as we will need one or two volunteers to accompany us. Jump Rope for Heart Students will be participating in a school wide Jump Rope for Heart event on Friday May 16th. Each student will be placed on cross graded teams to participate in stations of various different skipping activities. Please make sure students have appropriate footwear that day. We are suggesting that whether or not students choose to actively fund raise, each student bring in a loonie so that we may have a classroom contribution to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Thank you for your support! Yearbook Dufferin is once again publishing a Yearbook for 2007-2008. The order forms were sent home in late April. If you wish to order a yearbook please remember that orders are due with payment by Friday May 9th. Scholastic Scholastic orders for the month of May are here! If you wish to place an order please return the order form with cheque payable to Scholastic Canada by Tuesday May 20th. Remember : there is no school on May 19th, Victoria Day! Enjoy the long weekend!Nouvelles de la première année...

It’s
hard to believe we are ready to greet another
month... The month of March is always come and gone
again before you know it! The end of March also
signals the close of the Second Term at school.
Report cards were sent home on Thursday, March 20th.
As in the first term, we spent some time as a class
discussing our achievements and successes over the
course of the term, as well as identifying goals and
areas for continued practice and improvement. Please
spend some time to review your child’s report with
them and develop some individualized goals for Term
3. Please remember to sign page 3 of the report card
and return it to school along with the envelope.
Merci beaucoup to the volunteers who were able to accompany us on our skating trip. Getting the students laced up and ready for the ice is quite a challenge and I appreciate every moment of help provided by our volunteers! I have some wonderful photos to share from this day... Keep a close eye out, some of them may just appear in the Yearbook! Please note our final skating session will be this Wednesday, April 2nd. We will board the bus at Dufferin at 10:10. Our ice time runs from 10:30 - 11:30. Students will have an opportunity to eat their snacks when we return to the school. Please make sure that your child comes to school with all necessary equipment, including a bag in which to carry skates, mittens or gloves, and a helmet if you have signed they are required to wear one. Please note that students arriving without a helmet will not be permitted on the ice if their form has been signed that one is required. Please note that the format for Grand Erie email has changed. If you need to contact me, please send an email to Otherwise, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school! Sincerely, Mlle C. Macoretta Curriculum Français We continue our work with literacy centres and guided reading groups in the month of April. We will also be working on the writing process to revise and refine a short piece of writing based on the work the students did over the March Break. Throughout April we also extend our look at prepositions to include the words ‘devant / derrière / à côté de’ (in front, behind, beside). Also, as part of our daily read aloud and shared reading, we will be practising the skill of making connections between different texts we have read, as well as making personal connections with text using the sentence starter ‘this story makes me think of.... because...’ Also, through the month of April we will be intensifying our study of regular ER verbs by examining the various forms of verbs found in print and trying to explain and justify those uses of the verbs. Math Toward the end of March we began our formal inquiry into addition by examining numbers closely as a family of facts and stories. We spent some time ‘writing the stories’ of some numbers to show all of the different ways particular sums can be composed (ie. 2+7=9, 4+5=9, 3+6=9). Rather than focus on drilling these basic math facts, we have been emphasizing awareness of number relationships and ways in which numbers fit together, and the roles that they play; for instance, in the question 2+7=9, we have been working on identifying 2 and 7
as the Parts, and 9 as the Whole of the question.
This will allow us to examine addition and
subtraction as related operations. We will continue
to practice and reinforce this concept throughout
April. We will continue to refine and practice our
addition skills as we begin our formal examination
of money later in the month, where will be
identifying coins and adding small sums of money.
Science / Social Studies To begin April we look toward a study of Energy and energy use in our daily lives. We begin this unit by reviewing what we learned about the importance of the sun in our study of Daily & Seasonal Cycles. A large focus for this unit will be identifying where energy comes from; what are the various sources of energy we use to power every day objects. With Earth Day being in April, we will spend a significant amount of time discussing energy conservation. Toward the end of April and into May we turn our attention back to Social Studies as we begin a unit on mapping skills. We will be examining common features of maps such as symbols and colours and the idea of scale. The students will be creating maps of the playground and of the park using symbols they have created. Drama We thank Mlle Rohan for her assistance in teaching Health to our class. This block of time on Day 1 will now be devoted to Drama. I have been looking forward to beginning Drama with our class! Visual Arts We continue work on our science related art project, creating a seasonal forest using organic shapes and lines. We continue to monitor the weather for a chance to get out and examine the horizon line. I will keep you posted! Scholastic Scholastic orders for the month of April are here. If you wish to place an order please submit the order by Monday April 21st. Special Guest... Merci to the Parent Council who have arranged to have Quincy Mack visit our school to deliver his age appropriate anti-bullying presentation. We look forward to this presentation and visit on April 17th! Reminder... Friday April 18th is a Board designated PA day; students have the day off!
Nouvelles de la première année... mars 2008
What a month February was for us! In addition to Valentine’s Day, we also celebrated our 100th Day of School on February 13th. The students demonstrated many successes in reading, writing, and counting in French. Thank you also to the families who sent in treats for our tasty 100 piece snacks... What a sweet couple of days! We are very fortunate to have families and friends who continue to support all of our activities. We also had another field trip during February, a tour of the Brantford Public Library! Many of the students expressed excitement following our trip and a desire to get a library card! We also very much enjoyed our venture onto public transportation! Merci to Mme Kushner and Mme McLachlan who were able to take time out of their schedules to join us. We have another trip coming in March..... Skating! Please see the attached note for more information. As you know, March will be a month that passes through very quickly. Please note on your calendars that this year March Break begins on Friday March 7th. This is a Board designated holiday. We return to school on Monday March 17th. However, before we get too much time to settle back into routine, we will be back on holiday! This year the Easter Holidays fall on Friday March 21st, and Monday March 24th. Please note that as this month is quite a short one, there will be no Pizza Day. Please look for another letter to be coming home soon! This month you will also be receiving a copy of the term 2 report card. Report cards will be sent home on Thursday March 20th. Please take the time to review your child’s report together, noting in particular the progresses made between terms 1 and 2. If you have any questions after viewing the report, please contact me at the school or by email. Unlike the first term reports, there are no formally scheduled interview times. If you would like the chance to meet with me, please send me a note and we will arrange a time. As always, should you need to reach me, please call me at the school or email me at cmacoret@fc.gedsb.net. Sincerely, Mlle C. Macoretta Français Each student has now had the opportunity to complete at least five show and tell presentations. Please encourage your child to log their presentation date in their agenda to ensure they are prepared on their day. If you need another copy of the schedule, please send me a note in the agenda. I have been extremely impressed with the quality of the presentations and the obvious efforts students have put in to addressing the items in the evaluation rubric. The results have been wonderful dialogues on items of importance to the students; we have learned so much about each other through these presentations! Please remember that the last presentations will take place on March 27th. After having focussed in January on the verb être and the verb avoir in February, we are ready to turn our attention to regular ER verbs. We will be examining the form and use of the verbs in context, using very common verbs with which the students are already familiar (eg. parler, manger, sauter, écouter). This study will involve activities in all three strands (reading, writing, and oral communication).
Math Science Throughout February we had an in depth look at our Five Senses. Our activities were based around identifying the senses and their associated organs. We also participated in many experiments designed to determine how we use our senses to interact with the world around us. As February draws to a close we begin a study of Daily and Seasonal Cycles. This will include an examination of each season’s characteristics, as well as ways in which living things adapt to deal with changing weather conditions. This unit also includes an integrated art project that is always a favourite.... Visual Arts In March we will be using our study of Daily and Seasonal Cycles to examine and use both organic and geometric shapes as we work to create seasonal cycles of trees using only torn paper. Of course, we will take break from artistic studies to create some Easter Holiday masterpieces for your collections! Scholastic Scholastic order forms are here! If you wish to order items to be received in time for Easter, please submit order form with payment by Wednesday March 12th. Remember... March Break is from March 7 - 14th. Whether you are relaxing at home or on the beach, please enjoy a safe and well deserved holiday! Nouvelles de la première année...

Congratulations Dufferin, we have
made it to the half way point in the school year! We
have five months of successes behind us and we are
looking ahead to five more months of success,
discovery, and growth. January always catches us by
surprise at Dufferin... It is here and gone before
you know it! We began the New Year with some
changes; a new look to our classroom, and a new
student to add to it! In January we welcomed Olivia
G to our class. I was very pleased to see how each
of the students in our class worked together to
welcome Olivia and to make sure she learned of our
routines and responsibilities; everyone was quick to
offer a helping hand! Merci to all of the students
for your cooperation and commitment to a friendly
and inclusive environment.
We are more than ready to keep the momentum going as we move into February. We have many special activities planned, both inside and outside of the classroom, as we move through this very special month. I have attached a copy of our class list to assist you as you begin to make your Valentine cards. This month we will also be celebrating another momentous occasion.... 100 Day! We will be celebrating 100 Days of School on Monday, February 11th (barring any more Snow Days of course!) Our celebrations will include a variety of activities in both Math and Language. Please see the attached note for more information and for what you can do to prepare. This year, February brings with it one very significant change. This year, the first Family Day holiday will fall on Monday, February 18th. Please note that in order to accommodate this holiday, we will be losing the Day 5 that would have otherwise been February 18th. When students return on Tuesday February 19th, it will be a Day 1 on our calendars. As always, should you need to reach me please feel free to contact me at the school or send me an email at cmacoret@fc.gedsb.net. Sincerely, Mlle C. Macoretta Curriculum Français Each student has now had the chance to deliver at least one Show and Tell presentation. We have certainly had some jitters for this first time, but the students have done quite well! I encourage students to refer to our rubric as they plan their presentation. We have also been able to see some students make use of very useful strategies, including referring to a sheet of notes, as well as creating introductory and concluding statements. Well done! Please continue to watch the calendar closely for your day.
As part our 100 Day celebrations each student will be given a folder containing 100 words which should be familiar to them. As the students read these words with me, I will highlight the words. Once the folder is complete, I will send it home as a success for you to share. Please note that as a challenge for those who are ready, I have created folders of 200 words! Math Throughout the month of January we studied the properties of 3D figures and their relationships to 2D shapes. Students had many opportunities to manipulate these shapes and to identify them in the environment. As part of our 100 Day and Valentine’s Day celebrations we will engage in a variety of math centres, with a significant focus on Data Management (collecting, sorting, and graphing data). The activities connecting our learning will be centred around the following: Number Sense & Numeration:
Geometry & Spatial Sense:
Data Management:
Social Studies / Science We have recently completed our initial look into the local community by focussing on community helpers and the roles they play in our society. We will revisit this theme later in March as we examine some of the places in a community, and some of our city’s features. We have now switched our focus back to Science. We have begun to examine the Five Senses and to experiment with their use in class. This unit allows us to make many connections to Language as we study adjectives for textures, sounds, actions, and visual stimuli. Toward the end of the month we will apply the study of ‘Touch’ as a transition into the examination of Materials, and the various materials that every day objects are made of. Visual Arts It’s
official... We are painters! Our discussions
surrounding works of art were an enormous success as
students were able to make insightful comments about
a piece based on the colours the artist chose, and
the way in which the artist used his/her tools. With
success we used different mediums to recreate
Wassily Kandinsky’s famous print "Squares
with Concentric Circles." We are so proud of
these pieces, and they will remain on display in our
class for some time. We now turn our eye to
experimenting with different techniques to create
texture, including the use of stencils and creating
rubbings. As part of our Valentine’s Celebration,
we will also be working on creating a series of like
images which differ in texture based on the tools we
use.

If you wish to order from this month’s Scholastic flyer, please send in completed order form and cheque by: Friday February 15th.
Nouvelles de la première année...
Welcome back Dufferin! I hope that the holidays were a safe and relaxing time for all. I am very excited to be back in the classroom with the students, embracing 2008 and all of the challenges and experiences it will bring our way! I would like to extend a huge "Merci" to all of the families who helped and supported our holiday activities in a variety of ways. Our holiday events were very successful and enjoyed by all. Your donations were, as always, extremely appreciated. Merci à tous! In January we get right back into the swing of things with many familiar activities such as guided reading groups and math centres to help us settle back into our regular school routine. As you will see below, we have a lot to do! We will also have two more sessions with Kelso as we wrap up our investigation into Small and Large Problems, and solutions for dealing with each. We will also begin new endeavours, such as formal Show & Tell, and weekly dictations. Please see the attached notices for more detailed information regarding each of these activities. January brings with it a milestone looming on the horizon... 100 Day! Barring any snow days, the 100th Day of School will be Monday, February 11th. We will mark the weeks leading to 100 Day with celebrations and activities related to reading and to math. Our celebrations with culminate with a day of festivities on 100 Day. Please look for more detailed information to follow in our February newsletter. As always, should you need to contact me you can reach me at the school or you can send an email to cmacoret@fc.gedsb.net. I wish all of the students, their families, and their friends, health and happiness in 2008! Mlle C. Macoretta Français Before returning to our guided reading groups, I will spend some time during the first week back to perform an informal reading assessment with each student. I will use this information to realign groups where necessary to ensure students are receiving relevant, focussed instruction. Remember that our goal is to have as many students as possible reading at the 6D level by the end of Grade 1! By the end of January you will receive a summary detailing your child’s current reading level, as well as a brief explanation of skills necessary to achieve that particular level. In January we will also begin an in depth examining of interrogative words, as well as the use of intonation and inflection when asking questions. We will also begin working on simple narrative structures with basic description. Each of these skills will help support our preparation for Show & Tell Presentations. To complement our studies in Social Science, we will also begin our look at one of the two most important verbs in French - le verbe Etre (to be). We will integrate practice of this verb throughout many other subjects, as well as in our daily writing activities. Math We begin in January with a very brief review of the basic 2-dimensional shapes. In our review will we be focussing on identification and comparison of basic shapes by attribute. As we progress through our review we will begin introducing 3D shapes in a way that will allow students to draw connections to and identify relationships between 2D shapes and 3D figures. We will spend some time building towers and structures with 3D figures in order to determine which figures are better suited for construction. We will use this knowledge as we examine our school and surrounding structures more closely. We will also perform scavenger hunts and inventory the number of items we can find in our classroom / school in the shape of a certain figure. We will use this information to introduce and create a basis of learning for Data Collection and Management, which we will begin in February. Social Studies / Science In the first few weeks of January we will look to conclude our study of Community Helpers. The students will become proficient with language and terms for the various community helpers, and will develop an ability to associate necessary tools to a profession. We will conclude our work with some written activities that offer the students a variety of opportunities to show their learning, such as creating and solving riddles, as well as illustrating and creating captions to explain an important function of a community helper. Part way through January our focus will shift from Social Studies to Science as we begin exploring and examining the Five Senses. Through various experiments we will be identifying each of the five senses and their associated organs. We will discuss the ways in which the senses help us to know the world around us, as well as the impacts and effects on humans of losing any one of the senses. Visual Arts As part of our artistic studies this month we will be looking at the world around us and identifying geometric and organic shapes. We will be using these shapes in our artwork. We will also spend some time experimenting with paint and different media for creating shape and texture (stencils, common classroom items, our fingers). Our study of paint will also include an examination of some very well known painters as we examine popular pieces. We will not only discuss the elements in a piece we prefer, but also what message we think the painter was trying to convey through the work. We will look to conclude this inquiry by creating a few masterpieces of our own! Virtue of the Month Throughout the month of January we will be discussing the Virtue of Justice. As taken from the Virtues Project Website (http://www.virtuesproject.com/index.php ),"Practicing justice is being fair. It is solving problems so everyone wins. You don’t prejudge. You see people as individuals. You don’t accept it when someone acts like a bully, cheats or lies. Being a champion for justice takes courage." In Grade 1 this will mean a focus first on our own behaviour to determine of we are acting in a just manner on a daily basis. Secondly, we will look to empower ourselves and others by seeking ways to promote change at home, at school, and in the community that favours justice. Nouvelles de la première année... Our first class field trip was a success! The Grade Ones showed themselves to be wonderful ambassadors for our school as we enjoyed a (cold and wet!) morning of safety lessons and driving instruction. Merci to Mme Kushner who was able to accompany us. Despite the weather, the trip was enormously enjoyable. We also got to learn first hand the reasons for which six year olds are not given driver’s licenses! Merci to Officer Diana of the Children’s Safety Village who helped to organize our trip and who rearranged her programming to ensure the weather would not be too much of a factor in the success of our trip. I would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to all of the families who donated their beautiful junk for our science projects. I appreciate your continued support of classroom activities. The children have created wonderfully unique and creative creatures that will be on display for you to see during conferences. As always, if you need to reach me, please contact me at the school, or send me an email at cmacoret@fc.gedsb.net. Sincerely, Mlle Macoretta CurriculumFrançais
Math We are continuing on our journey of learning the numbers to 100. In the month of December will be focussing on numbers 75- to 100. This will require a considerable amount of repetition and drill. It would be beneficial if you could listen to your child count each night. It would also be fun for you to try and count as high as possible in French and allow your child to correct you! Toward the end of November we began our study into Patterning & Algebra by examining patterns using numbers, shapes, and colours. We have learned to assign a code (eg. ABAB) to to identify the pattern in a series. We will be spending some time creating and extending pattens, as well as deducing the missing elements in a given series. We will continue this study in the month of December by examining number patterns in the 100 chart as we practice counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's. Science We have completed our look at the needs of living things. The students created and presented to the class an invented creature. The finished products are wildly creative and will remain on display in our classroom for some time. We now turn our attention to a unit of Social Studies. We will return once more as Scientists in the New Year with an investigation into the Five Senses. Social Studies
Drama / Music / Health
Book Fair is here! Please plan to spend some time browsing through our Book Fair during interviews on December 6th and 7th! The class will also have the opportunity to visit the book fair during class time and to create a wish list! Snowy weather reminders.... The cold weather has arrived which means the snow can’t be too far behind! Please make sure that your child has a pair of indoor shoes at school each day. You are welcome to leave these at school. It would also be a good idea to send an extra pair of mittens in your child’s back pack for those days they do not dry in time for recess! We wish you a very safe and happy holiday with family and friends. Joyeux Noël mes amis!
Nouvelles de la première année... Can you believe that November is already here? We have grown as a group through 39 days of school. We have experienced successes, encountered difficulties, taken on new challenges, published our work, and made new friends. We have effectively become a team. The class is settling quite well into our routines as students regularly support one another to solve problems where able, and to meet expectations. This group of students was a source of inspiration in October as, while practising the Virtue of Thankfulness, I often heard statements of thanks and appreciation offered to peers in recognition of assistance, friendship, kindness, and generosity. Bravo Grade One! Get ready for our busiest month so far! In the month of November we continue to enrich our scholastic experience by welcoming special guests into the classroom. We will be planning for and working through our first major integrated project (please see attached for more information). We will also be participating in our first official field trip as we board the bus to head to the Children’s Safety Village of Brant (please see attached for more information). Please note: if you wish to volunteer to join us on the trip, the office must be in receipt of all current documentation, including policy record checks, as well as relevant letters of reference. Toward the middle of the month we welcome Kelso to our classroom. Kelso is a program run by our board’s Child and Youth worker that teaches students how to identify a problem as being a large or a small problem. The program empowers students by coaching them to select and make effective use of a variety of problem solving strategies. We will be talking quite a lot about bullies, victims, and bystanders, and what students should do if they should find themselves in any of these roles. This year, Mad Science will be available to all students as a one day program for students in Grades 1-7. Students will participate in teacher selected activities directed by the Mad Science staff. The activities are directly linked the Science curriculum for the Grade level. Dufferin school is asking each student to bring in $3 to help offset the cost of the program. Please send in payment for this valuable and highly enjoyable program as soon as possible. Ecole Dufferin has chosen to model and practice the Virtue of Tolerance for the month of November. As we approach Remembrance Day we are reminded of the evils that have and continue to manifest themselves in our world when we do not demonstrate Tolerance for others. In Grade 1, a focus on Tolerance will include discussions about accepting and valuing each other’s differences and individual gifts. We will also spend a significant amount of time modelling the idea that we do not always have to agree with one another in order to get along. On Friday November 9th Dufferin will be observing Remembrance Day at our annual assembly. The Grade 1s will be completing a piece of writing which demonstrates ‘what Peace means to me.’ As always, should you need to reach me, please call me at the school or send me an email at cmacoret@fc.gedsb.net. Sincerely, Mlle C. Macoretta Important Dates:
Curriculum Please continue to review the work sent home in the Friday Files each week. Worksheets sent home in the file are yours to keep forever and ever! Please continue to send the Homework Books back each week by Wednesday so I can add the next assignment in time for Friday. Français
Math In the month of October we completed our unit on Measurement. We
practiced using non Science We began our scientific studies in October by sorting and classifying
living beings from non-living objects. We have been discussing the needs
common to all living things. After carving our pumpkin, we planted the seeds
and continue to observe the changes and Visual Arts Most of our work this month will reflect work we will be doing for our Science project. This project addresses the expectation or creating and following a plan to create a 3D work of art. We will need to use Art periods as well as Science classes in order to complete this project on time. We will take some time, however, to discuss how the value and shade of a colour can be manipulated to show emotion as we create our class offering for the Remembrance Day assembly. To complement our math unit, we will also be using basic geometric shapes to create designs of repeating motifs using the primary colours. Some news about Report Cards... This year, Term 1 Report Cards are coming home in the first week of December, with student-led conferences being held the evening of December 7th and the morning of December 8th. Please watch for a notice to come home this month on which you can select your preferred time slot for a conference. Conferences are assigned on a first come, first served basis, so do please send this form in as soon as possible.
A Bulubulu is a fantastical creature entirely of our imagination. With your help, we will bring this creature to life... This project is based on a book we have in our libraries entitled Le Bulubulu. This book teaches vocabulary for the various human and animal body parts by adding animal features to the main character, a young boy. The students respond so well to and enjoy this book so much that it has now taken on a life of it’s own. Each year, using this book as a stepping stone, we invent our own Bulubulus. It is quite a large undertaking for us, but the results are always worth it. The first step in this project involves a written process. Students will select the number and types of body parts their creature will have. They will state what the animal is covered with (i.e. skin, fur, scales, feathers etc) and will also describe where the creature lives. The students will record this part of the project in their French journals. This will be a scaffolded process in which the students fill in the blanks on teacher provided templates; they will then create their rough copies in the journal, and, once corrected, will write their good copies. We anticipate this step of the process will last one week. Phase II.... Building! This is where we need your help. We have some craft supplies at our disposal, but we are asking families to look in their closets and cupboards to donate any items we might use. Here is a list of useful items:
If at all possible, please send in any donations any day until Friday November 9th. We will review our stock at that time and purchase any remaining items we need. We are hoping to build these projects the week of the 12th-16th. We would also appreciate one or two volunteers who could be present as we work on our creations. If you are interested in helping, please send a quick note in the agenda and we can confirm a date with you as we see how the project progresses. As always, we appreciate the many ways our families show their support. If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at the school. Merci, Mlle C. Macoretta
Nouvelles de la première année... And just like that, September is gone! As usual, September was a very busy month that brought with it many new and exciting challenges, constant changes, and new routines. The students seem to be adapting well to our new Balanced Day schedule. Our classroom rules, created together on the first day of school, have set up an atmosphere of inclusion and respect that has proved conducive to learning, growing, and succeeding together. I am very proud of the way the students have successfully made the transition to full time school, and I am both excited and optimistic for the coming year. Merci beaucoup to all of the families who were able to come to Meet the Teacher night. It was wonderful to meet the people I have been hearing so much about, as well as to see some familiar faces. I look forward to creating and maintaining ongoing dialogues with each of the families this year. October is shaping up to be every bit as busy as September. Many of our classroom activities this month will reflect Thanksgiving celebrations and Hallowe’en festivities. Please look for more detailed information to come home later in the month regarding the Hallowe’en costume party and parade. As always, should you need to reach me, please call me at the school or send me an email at cmacoret@fc.gedsb.net. Sincerely, Mlle C. Macoretta Curriculum Français I will begin reading with one child a day throughout the month of October. The goal of this session will be to determine individual reading levels for each child. This information will be used to create reading groups based on ability. Once reading groups have been assembled we will begin literacy centres. Each group will rotate through literacy centres where students will be engaged in various activities related both to reading, writing, and oral comprehension skills. The advantage to this organization is that students will receive differentiated instruction in small groups with others at very similar reading levels. We will continue to build upon our work in September by incorporating learned sentence starters into our daily writing. I will also continue to model, emphasize, and look for the appropriate use of upper and lower case letters, and periods, as well as the addition of ‘s’ to nouns to form the plural. Students will learn and model use of a variety of reading strategies for decoding new text (ie. picture clues, initial consonant sounds). Math We continue to review the numbers 1-25 in a variety of ways, on a daily basis. Please continue to have your child count for you at home. As we move through October, we will be pushing our number recognition to 50. A significant emphasis continues to be the automatic recognition of numbers out of sequence, as well as the ability to name numbers that precede or follow a given number. We will continue to embed the use of number words un-cinq in other curricular areas as we add six-dix in our math work. For the first few weeks in October we will be working on our unit from the Measurement strand of the curriculum. Students will be learning to use comparative language to describe relative sizes of objects. They will also be using non standard units to measure the length, width, and height of every day objects found in the classroom. We will also be measuring ourselves on a chart which we will keep in the class so we can watch how we grow! Towards the end of the month we will begin our final investigation of the term, which will carry us into November. We will be taking a look at basic 2D shapes by studying and comparing their properties and attributes. Please look for more information to follow in our November newsletter. Social Studies / Science We are just about to complete our first unit in Social Studies based on Relationships, Rules, and Responsibilities. We have identified important people in our lives at home and at school. We have identified the rules of the school and of our classrooms, and the reasons for which those rules are in place. The students are bringing home booklets they have made full of wonderful pictures and words about their families; please look at these with your child and have them explain their work to you. Science We are beginning our scientific studies with an investigation into the characteristics and needs of living things. We will be examining the major parts of the body, as well as observing and describing changes in both animals (ourselves,) and plants as they grow. The students will be able to both observe and care for our classroom plants and pets (beta fish). We will also be planting our own grass and observing the changes from seed to plant. As part of a cumulative task, students will demonstrate their learning by creating and designing a creature with specific needs based on their body structure. Please look for more information on this to follow toward the end of the month. Scholastic orders are here! Please return your order by Friday October 19th to ensure receipt by Hallowe’en!
Nouvelles de la première année....
Bienvenue and Welcome to Grade 1! It was wonderful to see familiar faces and to welcome new ones on the first day of school. I hope that everyone had a relaxing and restful summer. I also hope you are as excited as I am to start this journey together! This year we are fortunate to have three teachers delivering the Grade One program. Mme Gorecki, Mlle Rohan, and myself will be working very closely together to further enhance and align our programs. In addition, we welcome Mme Martisius as both our Computers teacher and our Librarian for book exchange. As you know, September is typically a very busy month at school, and this year will certainly be no exception. Due to the cap in primary classes that has come into effect this school year, class placements remain tentative throughout the month of September. I will continue to communicate with you on a regular basis regarding any potential changes. Please create a daily routine of checking your child’s agenda as I will use this as a tool to communicate with you. Our Parent Council is once again hosting it’s annual Meet the Teacher night, to be held on September 20th. Please come out for a pizza dinner and for the chance to meet classmates and friends, to visit our classroom, and to learn a some information regarding classroom routines and expectations. I will also briefly share some key information about our program. I am looking forward to seeing you there! If you haven’t already done so, please send in $8 to cover the cost of the agenda. We thank Parent Council for once again generously subsidizing the cost. In Grade 1 we use the agenda every single morning to enter dates and events relevant to our activities. It also represents a significant word knowledge and grammar exercise that will increase in difficulty and complexity over the course of the year. Please find attached a copy of our calendar for the month of September. Please post the calendar in a place where you can refer to it often. If you have any other questions, or should you need additional copies of the calendar, please feel free to call me at the school, or send me at email at cmacoret@fc.gedsb.net. I look forward to meeting everyone soon and to developing a partnership with our parent community to support our students. Sincerely, Mlle C. Macoretta Curriculum

We begin the year with an intensive review of the entire Jolly Phonique program. At the rate of one sound a day, we review each letter in class as well as suggest relevant words to add to our word wall. New this year, we will also be using our Jolly Phonique books as a personal dictionary. Each time we learn new vocabulary words from another curricular area, we will include this words in the relevant section of our book. As such, these books will remain at school for the duration of the school year. Upon completion of review I will be sending home tools which you can use to practice identifying individual sounds and blending sounds to make small words. Students will also be engaged in directed journal writing on a regular basis, the topics for which will vary and will reflect a teaching point relevant to curricular content and personal ability. For the month of September, we will be focussing largely on learning to read each other’s names, to recognize the days of the week, and to recognize high frequency words in shared texts (ie. le, la, les, des, etc). Math
We begin the year with a unit from the strand of Number Sense. By the end
of September students are expected Science / Social Studies Throughout the year we will be alternating our units in Social Studies and Science. We begin the year with a unit of Social Studies on Relationships, Rules, and Responsibilities. Our focus for September will be to identify the important people in our lives, their relationships to us, and the roles they play for us. We will be discussing some of the rules we experience and how these rules are affected by the relationships governing them. We will also be reviewing and introducing new vocabulary terms related to family and relationships which we will revisit frequently during Language Arts. Visual Arts Our creative work will begin with a careful look at different types of lines in art work and in the environment. We will be looking at the different ways lines are used in art to create mood. Students will be asked to select and use a variety of lines in their work. Now for our first request... We have a back to school craft planned for the end of the month but we need your help! We would appreciate donations of cardboard egg cartons. Some changes.... As mentioned, Mme Martisius will be providing French language instruction in Computers to our class. This will take place in the library. As our teacher librarian, Mme Martisius will also be hosting our weekly book exchange in the library. In order to encourage independence in the library, Mme Martisius will involve the students in games and exercises designed to teach them research skills, the components of library, and the location of subject and age appropriate books. We are excited to have Mme Martisius as our French language librarian and appreciate her expertise. Grade One Exchange
Reminders I ask all families for their support as we remind you that École Dufferin is a nut free school. We do have a classmate with a severe nut allergy. I appreciate the dedication parents continue to show in ensuring the safety of all of our students. I also ask parents to remember that if they are sending treats to school to share with the class, they are now required to be store bought items. Scholastic Orders Scholastic orders for the month of September are here. If you would like
to place an order, please fill out the Teachers’ Requests... Each year there are a few items that are in high demand throughout the entire year. These items remain in our class for use by the whole class. We have started our classes off with a supply of each of these items. If you are able to donate any of the items on our list, we would greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much to those parents who have already sent in some of these items.
----------------------------------------- Neighbourhood walksFrom time to time throughout the year we will be leaving the playground to walk through our school neighbourhood. I will inform families of our purpose prior to each walk and will also include detailed schedules. However, the school is not required to collect formal permission forms for these walks. Please sign and return this portion of our newsletter to indicate that your child has permission to participate in these excursions over the course of the year. I _________________________ grant ______________________ permission to participate in neighbourhood walks throughout the 2007-2008 school year.
