Grade Three News....

May has arrived! Summer is quickly approaching now. April seemed to fly by and was a great month at Dufferin. The class was very diligent during Pause to Play when tracking the amount of time students spent in front of the t.v. or computer screen. Thank you for your support at home with this challenge.

May will be busy with Education Week Open House (May 1st), MLAT testing (May 7th) a field trip to Westfield Heritage Village (May 13th), a field trip to Brantford’s Water Treatment Plant( May 14th), our Jump Rope for Heart Event (May 16th)and E.Q.A.O. testing (May 26th - 29th). If you would like to join us on either field trip (and have submitted your police check and green volunteer package) please let me know. We will be walking to the Water Treatment Plant so there will be no cost for this trip. Our cost to Westfield Heritage Village will be subsidized with our earnings from popcorn sales.

We will be selling popcorn at the Open House this Thursday, May 1st. Come and try some new flavours! Caramel, Cheesy Dill, Jalapeno Jack, Nacho, BBQ, ButterSalt, Salt & Vinegar, Dill, Ranch, and Ketchup ($2 for Caramel and $1.50 for other flavours)

A letter went home last week about our end of the year trip to the Science Centre. The forms and money are not officially due until June 1st. However, if you know that your child will be attending please send the forms in as soon as possible so that we can have an accurate idea of how many students will be with us. The money itself does not need to be submitted until June 1st. See the attached calendar for other important dates. Please call me at the school if you have any questions or concerns. I hope to see you at our Education Week Open House on Thursday.

Merci,

Mlle Tanaszczuk

Félicitations!

Congratulations are in order for Kalista’s daily efforts and diligence in speaking French. Congratulations to London who consistently made an effort to show and seek forgiveness whenever conflict arose this past month. Kalista and London will receive a certificate at our monthly assembly for their efforts. A special certificate will be awarded to the students who participated in Pause to Play and successfully spent a whole week away from the t.v. and computer screen. Congratulations Hayden, Kyla and Patricia on choosing alternate activities each evening of the week!

Scholastic Book Orders

May book orders went home recently, they are due back on Thursday, May 8th. Please remember that payments must be made using cheques made payable to Scholastic Canada Ltd. Happy Reading!

Dufferin Year Book

Don't forget to put in your order for the 2007-2008 Yearbook. Order forms went home on Monday April 28th. Yearbooks are $12.00, and orders will be accepted until Friday May 9th.

Language

The class practised their spelling and dictée words frequently throughout April and were much more successful on our weekly tests. Bravo to all members of the class on a job well done! Our French words for May will be a review of key terminology for mathematics. Our English words will focus on homophones as well as key words found in reading comprehension questions. The word list went home on April 28th.

Everyone has also been very busy writing paragraphs, stories and similes. Our book of class similes is as diverse as the rainforest. Paragraphs for our English novel study of Stone Fox and our two social studies projects will be on display this Thursday evening during Open House. The quality of each student’s work is impressive.

Grade Three News....

March was a very short month but our class managed to accomplish a lot at school. I hope that you enjoyed all of the family time together during our long weekends and March Break. We will be able to settle back into our daily routine during the month of April. We have new units starting in Math and Science. We will be participating in Backwards Day on April 1st to recognize April Fools’ Day. As well, I have signed our class up to participate in the Turn Off the T.V. Week Challenge from April 21st -27th. Other classes will also be facing this challenge during this time. Participation is voluntary and I hope that all families who are able to participate will seriously consider entering this challenge to turn of the T.V. and Computer (except for work related reasons) for the week. We will brainstorm various activities in class that can help to pass the time and to enjoy the spring during this week. The calendar sent home with this newsletter will highlight other important dates and events in our classroom and at École Dufferin in general.

There are quite a few people that I would like to thank for their help this past month. Firstly, merci à la famille Gracey. The Gracey family sent in wonderful information cards that helped to deepen our understanding and appreciation of 5,10,20, 50 and 100 dollar bills and the security features of our currency. Secondly, merci à M Merson who joined us and helped out on our skating trip. Thank you as well to Mme DeBoer who has been volunteering in our classroom on a weekly basis and accompanied us on our skating trip as well. Mme Aniol is another parent volunteer who helps out on a weekly basis in our classroom with both our literacy and math programs. And last, but certainly not least, merci à Erica. Erica is a co-op student from B.C.I. who is a wonderful addition to our classroom every afternoon as she works with the students during math, science, social studies and reading time. Both the students and I appreciate her helpfulness and abilities in our classroom.

Merci,

Mlle Tanaszczuk

Félicitations!

Congratulations are in order for Sarah for her daily efforts and diligence in speaking French. Congratulations to Dillin and Liam as well. Dillin has been working hard in every subject to complete his assignments on time and with care. He has been especially diligent with his social studies work. Liam was awarded a certificate from Mlle Macoretta for the kindness he showed to another student at our school in sharing his helmet on our skating trip. Bravo! These students’ efforts and success were recognized at our awards assembly at the end of March.

Scholastic Book Orders

April book orders went home on Thursday, they are due back on Friday, April 11th. Please remember that payments must be made using cheques made payable to Scholastic Canada Ltd. Happy Reading!

Language

We enjoyed many funny Reader’s Theatre presentations of fractured fairy tales after March Break. Thank you for all of the time you spent practising at home; most lines were read fluently and some were even memorised! Bravo to all members of the class on a job well done! We will continue our work with fractured fairy tales during our English literacy block. During our French literacy block we will continue to work with words and practice listening to short dictées while filling in missing words. We will also be researching and writing short scenes to create our own bilingual heritage moments. This short project will tie in both languages as well as Social Studies.

Math

Our unit on money went very well as everyone really worked hard to understand and practice finding total prices and making change. We will be working through two short units in math this month. The first unit begins this week and is Transformational Geometry. The key vocabulary that you can review at home is as follows: un quadrillage, une translation, vertical, horizontal, diagonal, une rotation, un centre de rotation, un quart de tour, un demi-tour, trois quarts de tour, une réflexion, un axe de réflexion, une image, un axe de symétrie, le sens des aiguilles d’une montre and le sens inverse des aiguilles d’une montre. It will be helpful to practice rotating shapes on grid paper in quarter turns (one quarter, two quarters, three quarters and a full rotation) as well as to review the concept of clock-wise and counter clock-wise.

We will start a unit on Fractions as well during April. You can practice fractions and mixed fractions while following a recipe together and then dividing your delicious creations into equal parts for the whole family. The key French words and terms for this unit are as follows: des parties égales, des fractions, des demies, des sixièmes, des quarts, des tiers, des huitièmes and un nombre fractionnaire.

Science

We are starting a very interesting and fun unit on soil this month. At the end of the month we will have a review and a quiz on the concepts learned. During the unit, we will be looking at the make up of soil and various construction materials that come from soil. We will also be planting seeds and creating a class compost. Some keys words for this unit that you can review and practice reading and writing at home are: l’argile (clay), la brique, le compostage, la digue (dam), l’érosion, le glissement de terrrain (landslide), hiberner, le humus, le limon (mud, silt), des racines pivotantes, des racines fasciculées, le sable, le schiste argileux (shale), le terreau (compost), le torchis (daub, building material).

March, 2008

Grade Three News....

Wow, I can’t believe that it’s March already! We’ve been really busy this past month with classroom projects and assignments. The magnetic boats were a great success as everyone made a boat that could hold at least 15 pennies and be pulled by a magnet. Thank you for your support at home with this assignment. Bravo troisième année on a job well done!

The Grade Three classes have started a delicious fundraiser throughout the school to help offset the cost of our field trips. Every Tuesday and Wednesday, we will be selling flavoured (Kernels) popcorn to all classes during the first Nutrition Break and delivering the popcorn at the second Nutrition Break. The cost of a bag of popcorn is $1.50/bag. Our class is responsible for taking orders and delivering popcorn on Wednesdays. We will eat before orders are taken and after deliveries are made. We started this past week and it was great success. Everyone did well taking the orders, counting up the money owed and money received and delivering the popcorn. This project is really going to help our counting skills and give the Gr. 3 students an opportunity to demonstrate leadership and responsibility. We will continue with this fundraiser during the next few months. Merci à Mme Gasparotto who thought of this fundraiser and worked hard to bring it to Dufferin.

We will be going skating on March 20th. If you can join us for this trip (and have submitted your police check and green volunteer package) please let me know by March 13th so that I can add you to our list. It should be an enjoyable time.

I hope that you all have a wonderful month and enjoy the many holidays ahead. Please see below for additional information and important dates.

Merci,

Mlle Tanaszczuk

Félicitations!

Congratulations are in order for Kassandra, Rachael and Simon for the daily efforts and diligence in speaking French. Congratulations to Sam as well. She has been working hard in math each day to show her work, answer word problems in full sentences and explain her thinking. Bravo! Their efforts and success will be recognized at our awards assembly at the end of February.

Scholastic Book Orders

March book orders went home on Wednesday, they are due back on Friday, March 20th. Please remember that payments must be made using cheques made payable to Scholastic Canada Ltd. Happy Reading!

Language

We are taking a slight detour before we begin our novel study of Sarah Plain and Tall. We are completing a short unit during our English classes on Pioneers and First Nations Peoples. Students are reading short texts and answering questions about pioneer times to increase their understanding of this subject before we begin our novel study. We are looking at many aspects of everyday life in pioneer times such as technology, food, schooling and the various challenges that settlers faced.

Our weekly dictées and spelling tests will be a repeat of our February words as snow days and illnesses affected our schedule of tests and our practise in class.

Math

We have worked on measuring time, capacity and mass. Please continue to work on telling time at home. In particular, ask your son or daughter to tell you what time it will be in 10 or 15 minutes or what time it was a few minutes ago. Remind them to count backwards or forwards by 5 when appropriate. This is a challenging skill and a great 10 minute activity for the evenings when there is no homework.

Next week we will begin our unit on money. We started this week with an introduction of counting up the classroom orders for popcorn. This fundraiser is a great real life application of our skills and everyone will benefit from the hands on experience. To practise further at home, encourage your child to figure out the change that you should receive when shopping. On nights when no homework is sent home, give them quick math problems where they can add up the total amount of money owing and subtract to find the change (i.e. If I buy three bags of popcorn at a price of $1.50 and give you a 10 dollar bill, how much change do you owe me?).

Science

Félicitations à tout le monde! The boats were a success and the presentations were wonderful. The question and answer period was full of great questions and very clear answers. Our class record so far is a boat that can hold 938 pennies and still float. Congratulations to Samantha for such a strong and stable boat! We will begin our next unit on Stability at the beginning of April.

Please see the calendar below for special dates and events.

February, 2008

Grade Three News.... Mlle Tanaszczuk

Wow, January flew by and we’re already into the month of February! January went well as everyone started off the new school year working harder than ever. I have been very impressed with our class overall this year and this month in particular. Everyone is showing determination and perseverance with daily tasks. Students have been cooperating very well in all subject areas and group activities.

In addition, this group has joined together in a common interest to protect the environment. As a class, we have come up with many practical ideas for conservation that can be implemented in the school and at home. As well, students have been busy researching environmental issues and writing letters to express their concern. I imagine that you have had some enlightening dinner conversations at home and are as impressed as I am with each student’s interest in and commitment to the environment.

February will be an exciting month as we hope to start an Environment Club at Dufferin with the help of any interested students, Mme Gibbon and Mlle Spicer. This club will be starting shortly as a result and exciting projects will start to take place around the school. Be sure to ask your child about his or her ideas to help the environment. They have some very creative and practical ideas.

I hope that you all have a wonderful month and enjoy February 18th, Family Day. Please see below for additional information and important dates.

Merci,

Mlle Tanaszczuk

Félicitations!

Congratulations to the whole class on achieving another BINGO! Everyone worked so hard this month and showed such respect for the rules that we had many opportunities to draw numbers. We will celebrate next Friday.

Congratulations are also in order for certain students who have excelled in various areas. At the beginning of January, Dillin and London were recognized for their hard work and perseverance in Math class. Patricia once again earned a certificate for her consistent efforts to speak and improve her French in class. During the month of January, Kyla has shown a great and consistent effort in speaking French on a daily basis, in all subject areas and has therefore earned a certificate for her oral French. Brooke has persevered both at school and at home to write many wonderful stories and to see them through to publication. Liam has persevered with his daily math assignments and improved the quality of his answers and rational. Bravo to Brooke, Liam, Dillin, London and Kyla for their determination, success and certificates this month.

Scholastic Book Orders

January book orders went home on Monday, they are due back on Friday, February 15th. Please remember that payments must be made using cheques made payable to Scholastic Canada Ltd. Happy Reading!

Social Studies

We are continuing our unit on Heritage and civilization: Early Settlements in Upper Canada. We have been comparing pioneer times to our own from a child’s point of view in particular. It has been interesting and eye opening for some.

Language

We’ve just finished a novel study of Stone Fox, a book which everyone really enjoyed. We will complete a short but fun unit on fractured fairy tales before beginning our study of Sarah Plain and Tall. We have been working with words in both languages and have been looking at small changes in words that make a big difference in meaning and pronunciation during our French classes.

Our weekly dictées and spelling tests will begin this Thursday. The list of words will be sent home with this newsletter.

Math

The class really enjoyed our unit on multiplication and division. Please continue to work on the multiplication tables at home. We will continue our daily drills until we have studies all of the multiplication facts up to 12 times 12. We will be moving on to another hands-on and interactive unit; measurement. In order to reinforce our classroom learning, please challenge your child with measurement projects at home. The tasks can be as simple as asking your child to tell the time on the clock (analog not digital) or making a batch of cookies using a recipe and measuring out ingredients carefully. If you would like more ideas that can be used at home to practice measurement, please let me know. I’d be happy to provide you with some simple projects.

The class has been working very hard on a daily basis and as a result most work is being completed in class or finished at recess. Bravo to everyone for persevering with class assignments. As always, if work does come home, please remind your child to use a ruler, pencil and eraser. Encourage them to focus on neatness and completion.

Science

We are wrapping up our unit on Magnets and will be moving on to Stability shortly. The unit was very interesting with many small experiments. The boat building project will be coming home this Friday. Please set aside some time this weekend to sit down and read the rubric, your child’s plan as well as to look over their finished project and to hear their practice presentation. The trials and presentations of the boats will take place on Monday, February 11th at school. It will be quite exciting to see the different designs and cheer on the students.

Grade Three News....

Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a nice relaxing holiday and enjoyed time with family and friends. Thank you to everyone for the wonderful and thoughtful gifts that you sent in before Christmas. They were a lot of fun to open each morning and are greatly appreciated! I enjoyed seeing a lot of you at Open House in December. The student work on display was very impressive and I know it meant a lot to the class that their work was viewed by the public. They worked very hard on their books and the final results were amazing.

We will have a great start to the new year at school with interesting units and different challenges in each subject area. We also have a skating trip coming up on January 22nd with M. Burton’s class. If you would like to join us (and have submitted your police check and green volunteer package) please let me know. I do need to know if you are riding on the bus with us or meeting us at the civic centre in advance. We’d love to have you come along with us; it will be a lot of fun for everyone. I hope to see you there.

Sincerely,

Mlle Tanaszczuk

Scholastic Book Orders

January book orders went home on Monday, they are due back on Friday, January 25th. Please remember that payments must be made using cheques made payable to Scholastic Canada Ltd. Happy Reading!

Social Studies

We are starting a new unit on Heritage and civilization: Early Settlements in Upper Canada. We examined Canada’s place on our globe in term one. We will now look at it in relation to other countries (especially those where Settlers came from during pioneer times). We will discover the way of life of Pioneers and compare it to our own. We will be doing some investigating into our family histories to see what our origins are. We would love to hear any family stories as well as share pictures or artifacts detailing your family’s origins and past, in or outside of Canada.

Language

We are continuing our daily writing workshops in both languages. The students have published at least one story each and we will be working on further publications. The books will be sent home later this week for you to enjoy. Please return them to school so that they may be part of our classroom library for the next few months. Bravo to all of the authors and illustrators. There is a lot of talent and creativity in our classroom!

Our weekly dictées and spelling tests will begin next week as the words will be introduced and practised in our word knowledge lessons each week prior to being tested. The list of words will be sent home later this week.

We will continue to focus on our reading fluency while performing Reader’s Theatre. Please ensure that you continue to read each night at home. I will begin sending French and English books home to read on a weekly basis. This term there will also be follow up activities for the books that students will complete at school. During language period, we will practice identifying the main idea and supporting details when reading. Encourage your child to find the main idea and supporting details of various literature that you read together (i.e. newspapers, stories, etc.)

Math

We finished our unit on Data Management in December. We are starting to learn and practice multiplication and division. There will be short multiplication drills at school for mastery. We will start with the one times table and add one multiplication fact each day to our drills (starting with 2×2). The focus over the next two weeks will be on understanding multiplication and using it to solve problems. We will be moving on to division soon after. At home, it will be helpful to review multiplication facts each night. Once your child is confident with his or her skills you can work towards division by dividing various objects into equal groups.

As always, please remind your child to use a ruler, pencil and eraser when finishing math work at home. Encourage them to focus on neatness and completion.

Science

We are starting our unit on magnets this month. It will be a very fun unit and a hands-on learning experience. There will be a short weekend project sent home at the end of the month. The ground work will be finished in class. Students will have the necessary knowledge as well as a plan for their project. They may need a hand putting everything together and an audience for their trial runs. In order to ensure their success, please read the assignment rubric and instructions carefully together before beginning the assignment and again before handing it in. Thank you for your cooperation with this endeavour.

Grade Three News....

Christmas is just around the corner and the classroom is humming with excitement... the official countdown is on! We are keeping busy in class and will be travelling to the Wayne Gretzky Sport Centre for Swim to Survive on Wednesdays December 5th, 12th and 19th. A heartfelt thank you to all of our parent volunteers who can come along. We also have report card interviews and an Open House this month to look forward to. I hope to see everyone on both occasions where we will celebrate the students’ success. Have a wonderful month of December and a very merry Christmas!

Sincerely,
Mlle Tanaszczuk

Report Cards

Report cards will go home today, Monday December 3rd. Inside the envelope there will be a page with an interview time for the student conferences to be held Thursday evening and Friday morning. I have scheduled a time for every student, even if an interview was not requested. Please let me know if you cannot attend or need to change the time or date as soon as possible.

Also, page three of the report card is very important. It is a time for the students to reflect on their efforts and results. Please help them to brainstorm strategies that they can implement or continue to further their success at school. Take the time to acknowledge the work and effort that they have already demonstrated this year as well. Every student has accomplished a lot this year. Page Three needs to be returned to the school in the report card envelope. The interview this week will be a great time to return the third page and to review the goals together. I look forward to seeing you on Thursday or Friday and discussing the your child’s progress, successes and goals.

Félicitations!

Our virtue for the month of November was tolerance. Each nutrition break, many of the students in our class show great patience and acceptance towards their kindergarten buddies. At our assembly Friday Gabrielle, Kalista and Patricia were recognized for their daily efforts to help and to befriend the kindergarten students. Patricia was also recognized for her excellent efforts in both oral and written French. Hayden and Hunter are to be congratulated for their daily efforts during our daily Writers’ Workshop. In addition, the whole class deserves a round of applause as they earned another BINGO and a special treat.

Christmas Open House

I hope that I will see everyone Thursday, December 20th at Dufferin Open House. Our classroom will be open to family and guests who would like to see some original books and to hear them read aloud by the authors. The students have been working hard as authors, editors and publishers to create these literary works. There will be both live performances and tape recordings that can be heard while students are visiting other rooms and exhibits. Some students may also choose to present one or more of the group plays that we have practised and performed during our literacy block. Room 17 is the place to be between 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m!

Scholastic Book Orders

December book orders went home last week, they are due back on Monday, December 3rd. Please remember that payments must be made using cheques made payable to Scholastic Canada Ltd. Happy Reading!

Social Studies

We are wrapping up our unit on Canada in the next few weeks. We have started our Canadian Symbols Project. Students are choosing and researching symbols that they believe represent Canada.

Language

We have been focussing on our reading fluency while performing Reader’s Theatre. We have been conferencing and applying feedback from other students during Writers’ Workshops. Ask your child what he or she is writing about at school. Encourage him or her to share the plot, setting and characters.

We have also been working hard while making words in class. The competition can be fierce when we end our week with a ‘Mlle versus the class’ competition to see who can make the most words in a short amount of time. The score is the class 2, Mlle 1. You can play a similar game at home by writing and cutting out letters on scrap paper and drawing 13 letters out of a bag. Set the timer for 5 minutes and see who can come up with the most words. To challenge everyone in the family, allow French words to be played and have a French/English dictionary on hand in case a word is challenged. You’ll be surprised with how many words your child can think of and spell correctly. Words spelled phonetically are acknowledged but do not count for points!

Math

We have started our unit on Data Management. There will be some surveys coming home for family input as well as graphs (pictographs, bar graphs, etc.). Please remind your child to use a ruler, pencil and eraser when finishing math work. Encourage them to focus on neatness and completion. We will be moving on to multiplication and division soon. To get a head start you can practice multiplying numbers and creating equal groups with various items around the house.

December will be a month of reflection on time management. Students who do not reach the day’s goal in mathematics will be staying in to achieve the goal and to write short reflections on why they were not productive in class. Hopefully this will help to improve daily work habits and overall success. The goal is set based on the overall time given for the day’s work and the ability of the students to do the work (i.e. whether it is the start of a unit and the knowledge is new or the end of unit and the concepts have been practised and applied many times). At the beginning of a unit more time and less questions are given. There are always examples available for students and, of course, a primary resource as well (the teacher).

Science

We are wrapping up our classroom science experiment on plants. We will be moving on to a fun unit on magnetism near the end of December.

Novembre, 2007

Grade Three News....

It’s hard to believe that it’s already November. October rushed past us with Thanksgiving, a trip to Brantwood Farms and Hallowe’en. Our Hallowe’en festivities will be held this Wednesday on October 31st as we watch a movie and participate in the Costume Parade. November 11th is an important day of remembrance. Since we will not be at school on this date, we will be holding our Remembrance Day Assembly on November 9th. We have already had discussions about Remembrance Day in class and will continue to discuss the importance of remembering the past, present and future courage and sacrifices of the many soldiers who help to keep our country and world a safe place. We are also looking at Canada and what it means to be Canadian. Our virtue for this month is tolerance; a very important and pertinent virtue for the month of November. Feel free to discuss these topics at home as well. Keep checking agendas for important due dates and additional information.

Sincerely,

Mlle Tanaszczuk

Au revoir...

It is with sadness that we say good-bye to Courtney this week. She will be leaving our classroom to enroll at a school closer to her new home. She has been an enthusiastic, friendly and hardworking member of our class and I know that we will all miss her. We wish her all the best at her new school. She will be a wonderful addition to their Gr. 3 classroom.

Félicitations!

Our virtue of the month for October was thankfulness yet I’d like to recognize two students who continue to show September’s virtue of respect to their peers and the staff here at Dufferin School. Congratulations and thank you for your great efforts Patricia and Hayden! This Friday, Courtney will be recognized for her excellent efforts in French and Rachael for her diligence in mathematics.

Nightly Reading Assignment

Please continue with the nightly reading at home. Most students will have brought home a levelled book by now. While you are waiting for a book, please make a point of reading aloud together each night. I know that many of you are already reading together daily. As an extension of this routine, encourage your child to read various forms of text other than picture or chapter books. You could also read an article from the newspaper, our classroom newsletter, an old yearbook, magazines or even a story written at home.

Thank you so much once again for your cooperation and support with nightly reading. It is already making a difference for many students.

Scholastic Book Orders

November book orders went home last week, they are due back on Friday, November 16th. Please remember that payments must be made using cheques made payable to Scholastic Canada Ltd. Happy Reading!

Social Studies

We are continuing our unit on mapping skills, looking at Canada in particular. We are also studying Canadian symbols and landmarks.

Language

We continue to work with words on a daily basis. Our focus in French will be the verbs avoir and être (both conjugating the verbs and using them in the proper context). We will also be focussing on parts of speech in both our French and English language classes. We are at the editing and publishing stage of our Writing Workshops as each student will choose one piece of writing to complete. Their final pieces will be presented to the class this month. We will have an author’s corner at our Christmas Open House where each student will have a chance to present their writing to peers, friends and family.

Math

We are wrapping up our unit on addition and subtraction this week. Next week we will begin a unit on geometry. Encourage your child to identify shapes in his or her surroundings. We will have some fun with this unit as we study different shapes. Keep an eye out for a geometry project that will be coming home in two weeks. The due date and a rubric will be sent home with the project. In order to have materials for the project, please start saving recyclable items that are also geometric shapes (i.e. a rectangular cereal box, a round cream cheese container, etc.).

Science

We will be finishing our unit on plant life this month. Our trip to Brantwood Farms in October was a lot of fun and it also allowed us to study three plants up close. Everyone enjoyed choosing a pumpkin, corn and apples. The candy apples we made afterwards were a big hit! We will be studying bulbs, seeds and the germination process this month and practising our observation and sketching skills.

October, 2007

Grade Three News....

Wow, September passed quickly and Thanksgiving is just days away. Our school year started well and we have settled into classroom life. Thank you so much for sending in supplies for the classroom and for working so diligently at home with our dictée and spelling words. I was very glad to meet everyone at Meet the Teacher Night. If you were unable to attend and would like to come in and see our classroom, please write me a note in the agenda and let me know. October will be a busy month with a trip scheduled to Brantwood Farms and having a Halloween celebration. More information will be sent home regarding costumes and snacks closer to October 31st. Keep checking agendas for important due dates and additional information. I hope that you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration this weekend.

Sincerely,

Mlle Tanaszczuk

Félicitations!

Our class earned a BINGO and a hearty congratulations this month by following our classroom rules and routines. They enjoyed a pyjama day and a matinee as a result. Congratulations to Hunter, Courtney, Kyla, Dillin and Samantha as well. Although all members of our class worked at showing respect this past month, these students in particular displayed respect to themselves, their peers and the teachers here at Dufferin. This Friday, Simon will be recognized for his excellent efforts in French and Kassandra for her hard work in mathematics.

Nightly Reading Assignment

Reading is an essential element to success at school and it is especially important when attending French Immersion. Reading is a great activity that you can participate in with your child to help them and to enjoy time together. I encourage you to read many books together at home for pleasure, both at your child’s reading level and above.

We are learning the importance of rereading a book to improve confidence and fluency when reading aloud. Starting next week, one leveled book will be sent home each week as a short, daily reading assignment (10-15 minutes). I will alternate sending English and French books. Please ensure that your child reads through the book at least once each evening of the week. A letter will be sent home with each book outlining what steps to take and strategies to use before, during and after reading. Thank you so much for your cooperation and support with nightly reading. It will make a tremendous difference in your child’s confidence and ability.

Scholastic Book Orders

October book orders went home on Friday. Please check the calendar below for the return date. Please remember that payments must be made using cheques made payable to Scholastic Canada Ltd. Happy Reading!

Social Studies

We have started a unit on mapping skills, looking at Canada in particular. We have really focussed on locating the continent of North America and the country of Canada on a map. We are now looking at the provinces, territories and capital cities.

Language

In both French and English classes we have been working with words as we manipulate letters to create many small words and some larger ones. Everyone is quickly becoming an expert at finding secret words and phrases with the daily letters. Please check agendas each Monday and Wednesday night to see what letters have been written in to work with at home. We will work on the letters the following day and it is nice to see what words were created at home and can be added to the class list from our lesson.

During our writer’s block we are working on editing skills. Students are asked to check the spelling of words from our word lists as well as to make sure that punctuation and capitals are correct. Everyone has been working hard each day and as a result we have many budding authors in our midst. Ask your child about the stories and characters that they are currently working on. You’ll be amazed at what they’ve accomplished and how vivid their imaginations can be. We are also practising summarising by identifying the setting, characters, title, author, beginning, middle and end of a book. Encourage your son or daughter to tell you these details about books when you read together at home.

Math

We are starting a unit on patterns in one and two digit addition and subtraction. Please encourage your child to look for patterns around the house (calendars, colours, etc.) as well as to practice their addition skills. Thank you for your support at home with worksheets and homework. On any night when there is no official homework for students, please feel free to make up some addition and subtraction questions for extra practice.

Science

We are continuing with our unit on plant life. Thank you for all of your hard work at home collecting leaves and pressing them. We will be going on some nature science walks around the neighbourhood to observe and collect plant life. We will also start to study bulbs, seeds and the germination process. One exciting and hands-on component of our plant study will be a trip to Brantwood Farms next week (October 10th). There, we will have an opportunity to study apple trees, pumpkin patches and corn fields. If you can volunteer for this trip please let me know as we would love for you to come along!

Grade Three News....

Bienvenue! I’d like to welcome you to our class. At press time our group consists of 16 Grade Three students. This year will be an exciting and productive one as we try new things and learn together. We are off to a great start this first week back to school. We have been getting to know one another, reviewing our school, classroom and outside rules and getting settled into our daily school routines.

Curricular material will be reviewed and diagnostic assessment will be conducted prior to formally beginning our unit material. Our weekly spelling tests and dictées will begin next Thursday. Usually, the spelling test will take place on Thursday and the dictées on Friday. I will send home word lists for the month so that you may work ahead with your child if you like. Below are just a few notes of importance and a classroom calendar for September. I look forward to meeting all of you at our Meet the Teacher Night and welcome your calls at the school until then.

Sincerely,

Mlle Tanaszczuk

"Nut-Alert School"

École Dufferin is a "nut-alert"school as we do have students with severe nut allergies. Please do not send any food with peanut butter, nuts or those labelled "may contain nuts". The students are very good at checking and making sure that their snacks and lunches are safe for everyone.

Meet the Teacher Night

Our Meet the Teacher Night is scheduled for Thursday, September 20th, 2007. All parents/guardians are invited to attend and visit with teachers. I look forward to meeting all of you there from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. In the meantime, I welcome your calls at the school if you have any questions or concerns.

Agendas

Every student in our school uses a daily agenda to keep organized and to record important dates in addition to homework. There is a cost of $8.00 per student for the agenda. Please send this as soon as possible. I’d like to thank everyone who has already sent in the money. Agendas provide an invaluable opportunity for a consistent communication between home and school. They will be sent home each night as a daily update on tasks to be completed at home. Please review the day’s homework with your child and acknowledge that you have seen his/her agenda with your signature. Feel free to add any comments or questions so that I may respond.

Scholastic Book Orders

Every month Scholastic Book Order Forms will be sent home. Please check the Agenda as to the return date. Students who purchase books are not only building their own libraries but are helping to build our classroom library! Depending on the amount of each order, coupons are earned which can be used to purchase books and other classroom learning materials. Fill out and return the order forms on the back of the flyers and be sure to use the Ontario price column. Payments can be made using cheques made payable only to Scholastic Canada Ltd. Happy Reading!
