EQAO Assessments of
Reading, Writing and Mathematics: Primary Division (Grades 1-3) and Junior Division (Grades 4-6), 2006 - 2007

Overview

Teachers administered the EQAO assessment to grade three and grade six students in May and June of 2007. The test consisted of three booklets (one for mathematics and two for language). The reading tasks involved fiction and non-fiction passages, followed by open-response and multiple-choice items. For writing, there were short and long writing tasks and multiple-choice items to complete. The mathematics booklet consisted of open-response and multiple-choice items. The students booklets were returned to EQAO to be scored by trained classroom teachers and principals during the summer. Individual student results will be forwarded to the parent(s)/guardian(s) of the students who participated in the assessments.

Key Ideas to Remember:

  1. The assessments are developed using The Ontario Curriculum for Language and Mathematics.

  2. A different group of students is assessed each year and it is important to recognize that students have different abilities and experiences.

  3. The data provides information about the students’ performance during one assessment and it is therefore a "snapshot" of students’ knowledge and skills, not the entire picture.

School Demographics

At the time of the 2006-2007 Assessment, Dufferin School had an enrollment of 318 students in grades JK-8. As a French Immersion School, literacy instruction occurs only in French until grade two, at which time English reading and writing are added. The grade three students at Dufferin participated only in the mathematics component of the Provincial Assessment, which was administered in French. Grade six students complete all three areas of the assessment, in English.

In 2007-2008, École Dufferin students will be participating in the reading and writing component of the Grade Three Provincial Assessment, which is administered in English, in addition to the Mathematics assessment, which will continue to be administered in French.

School Results and Graphs

Interpretation of Results

For the Grade Three Mathematics assessment, administered in French, 41% of Dufferin students achieved Level 3 or 4. While this is a drop from our 2006 results, it is important to note that 46% of our grade three students achieved Level 2, and only 14% achieved Level 1. In Grand Erie, 59% of all grade three students achieved Levels 3 and 4, while province-wide, 68% of all grade three students achieved these levels.

In Grade Six Reading, 90% of all grade six students at Dufferin achieved Level 3 or 4 while 57% of all Grand Erie grade six students and 64% of all grade six students in the province achieved these levels. In Grade Six Writing, the percentages were: Dufferin 80%, Grand Erie 50%, and province 61%. In Grade Six Mathematics, percentages were: Dufferin 75%, Grand Erie 50%, and province 59%.

Next Steps:

The School Success Plan at Dufferin continues to focus on literacy and numeracy through staff professional learning and collaboration in the areas of balanced literacy and high-yield reading strategies. Students currently at Level 1 and Level 2 achievement in Reading are targeted specifically for focussed intervention and instruction to improve their skills.

École Dufferin staff also believe that an emphasis on student well-being through character education and on student engagement through emphasis on task-commitment behaviours will ultimately enhance student success in the areas of literacy and numeracy. For this reason, we have implemented Tribes and Virtues programs in the school.

Parents and the community can contribute to the improvement process through continued work in English or French literacy with children at home, and through volunteering with reading and library programs at the school. Participation in our monthly book orders and annual Book Fair provides additional resources to the classroom and school libraries.

Resource acquisition continues to be a focus at École Dufferin. We believe that the purchase of additional quality classroom and library reading materials will assist us in motivating students to become passionate about their reading.

Through these initiatives, we expect to see improvements in our assessment results over the next three years.
