Dear parents, We are how heading into May and your children have done an excellent job with their progress in kindergarten. I would encourage you to come on May 1st from 6:00 – 7:30 pm to the open house to see some of the work they have completed in the past few weeks. In JK mathematics we are now attempting to learn how to add and subtract numbers. We are also practicing writing numbers, and number conservation. We have also spent a lot of time in the last few weeks on money recognition and telling time. In SK mathematics, we have been working on adding and subtracting larger numbers. We have also been practicing telling time every hour and half hour. We are currently working on money - identifying money and recognizing equal amounts of money. In Sk mathematics we are also doing measurement using rulers. In language arts we have practiced various forms of writing to assist the students in learning to describe their thoughts. In grammatical concepts, we have been working on adding a period to the end of a sentence and the use of the capital at the beginning of a sentence. Reinforcing these concepts will help them to gain understanding of sentence structures. The students have just finished studying a unit about spring. We are going to start our unit about the zoo within the next few weeks. Continue to work at home sounding out words to your child, and also stating a word and having the child pull apart the word to hear the different jolly phonics sounds in the words. This is a continuous process that we will be working on until the end of the year. In science we are working on our 5 senses. During our nature walks in the upcoming few weeks, we will be discussing using our 5 senses to identify signs of spring. At the beginning of the June there will be a classroom trip. Please view all notes coming home in order to see the location of this trip. If you wish to be a volunteer on this trip, please let me know as soon as possible. Please be aware that you need to have a valid police check, volunteer orientation and references to participate in the trip. Thank you very much for your continued support in our classroom. I hope that everyone has a safe and happy Victoria day holiday. Sincerely, M. Samborski
Dear parents, We are now getting into the home stretch of the year. We will have an end of the year trip in the month of June. I am currently working on taking our class on a trip in the month of April. Please review all notes within the next few weeks, as the permission forms will be coming home soon . I will be looking for volunteers, so please send back the permission forms as quickly as possible. We are currently studying people of the community. We will be having various organizations from the community come in to the classroom to inform the students about the services they provide. Our new language unit for the month of April is all about insects and spring. A lot of students improved their reading ability and writing ability throughout the year. I will be performing the Kindergarten assessment tests in the next month. Please continue to practice the jolly phonics sounds, the letters of the alphabet and different phonemic activities in the next month. If you are looking for some ideas on how to help your child, please let me know, and I can send home some supplemental activities. In writing we are starting to write complete sentences about specific topics. I have encouraged the students to write sentences by themselves using visual cues from our ceiling sentence starters. For some students who are able to write complete sentences using the ceiling starters, I am encouraging them to try and write words by themselves. Please continue to practice writing capital and small letters in order to help them identify the different letters when they are reading in class. In SK mathematics we are focusing on collecting objects or data and make representations of their observations, using concrete graphs. We are also practicing subtraction in which we start off with a certain number and then we have to find out what happens when someone "swipes" some of the numbers. In JK mathematics, we are focusing on number recognition and simple addition problems from 1 - 5. We are also practicing our shape recognition and building 3-d shape structures in French. In science we are working on demonstrating an awareness of local natural habitats through exploration and observation. This section will be covered through our unit on insects and our walks in the neighborhood. The students are also focusing on participating in environmentally friendly activities in the classroom and the school yard. If you have any questions about what is happening in the classroom, or your child’s progress please feel free to contact me via e-mail or at Dufferin Public School 519-752-8232. Thank you for your continued support in your child’s education. M. Samborski Dear parents, Well, spring definitely feels like it is on its way. It is still too early to discard boots, |
