ONTARIO
SECONDARY SCHOOL DIPLOMA
In
order to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma,
a student must complete 18 compulsory credits, 12
elective credits, complete 40 hours of community
service and successfully complete the Ministry of
Education's literacy test.

GRADE
10 LITERACY TEST
All
students must successfully complete this test which
will be administered by the EQAO (Education Quality
and Accountability Office). Students will first
write this test in the fall of their grade ten
year. Unsuccessful candidates will be given the
opportunity for remediation at the school and will
be able to rewrite the test. Students identified
through an IPRC will be allowed accommodations for
the writing of the test. Students not working
towards an OSSD may be exempted from writing the
test.
40
HOURS COMMUNITY SERVICE
Forty
hours of community service involvement is a
requirement for graduation. Community Involvement
is a set of self-directed activities in the
community that do not involve remuneration and do
not replace a paid worker. A pamphlet entitled
"Community Involvement Diploma Requirements" is
available from Student Services which will provide
all the details concerning the Community Service
requirement.
THE
ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL CERTIFICATE
The
Ontario Secondary School Certificate will be
granted on request to students who leave school
before earning the Ontario Secondary School
Diploma, provided that they have earned a minimum
of 14 credits as follows:

CERTIFICATE
OF ACCOMPLISHMENT
Students
who leave school before fulfilling the requirements
for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma or the
Ontario Secondary School Certificate may be granted
a Certificate of Accomplishment which may be a
useful means of recognizing achievement for
students who plan to take certain vocational
programs or other kinds of further training, or who
plan to find employment after leaving
school.
NOTES:
a) To
meet individual students' needs, principals may
substitute up to three compulsory
courses.
b)
Certain Conservatory of Music Certificates may
count as credit towards diploma requirements. See
your Student Services Department for
details.
For
Students Who Entered Secondary School Prior to
September 1999
ONTARIO
SECONDARY SCHOOL DIPLOMA
In
order to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma,
a student must earn 30 credits. These credits must

Senior Social Sciences are any Geography, History,
Family Studies, Law or Guidance at the Grade 11
level or higher.
NOTES:
a)
Elective credits may be earned in all subjects,
including those named in the compulsory credit
list, provided that such electives are additional
to the compulsory credits. The elective credits
allow for concentration in a specialized area of
the curriculum.
b) In
order to meet the special needs of some students
who have been identified as exceptional by an
Identification Placement and Review Committee, the
Principal may reduce the 16 compulsory credits by a
maximum of 4. The student will still require a
minimum of 22 credits after Grade 9 in order to
graduate.
c)
Certain music certificates may be counted for a
maximum of one credit towards the OSSD in addition
to any other music credits earned in the school.

Royal Conservatory of Music Toronto - Grade VIII
Practical and Grade II Rudiments:

Western Ontario Conservatory, London - Grade VIII
Practical and Grade II Rudiments.
d)
Ontario Academic Courses (OAC), formerly Grade 13
courses, may be counted among those required for an
OSSD, and may be used to meet the compulsory credit
requirements for Grades 11 and 12.
CERTIFICATE
OF EDUCATION
A
student who decides to leave school before earning
the O.S S.D. is eligible to receive, upon request,
the Certificate of Education if he/she has earned a
minimum of 14 credits distributed as
follows:

For students identified as exceptional by an

Education.
