MP3 players must be turned off and remain out of sight while you are in the classroom or library during the school day unless your teacher has given you express permission to use one during the completion of individual work.

When MP3 players can be used in the school, appropriate MP3 player etiquette should be followed.

Infractions of the policy will result in escalating consequences, depending on the number of referrals to the Main Office.

Consequences:

For a first offence, the student will be sent to the Main Office, his/her MP3 player will be placed in the vault for safe keeping, and a parent will be asked to pick up the MP3 player.

For a second offence, the same consequence will be applied and also the student will receive an In-School Detention (full day).

For a third infraction, the student’s MP3 player will again be placed in the vault, the parent called, and  a one-day out-of-school suspension will be given. After the suspension, an administrator will request a meeting with the student and his/her parent to discuss the issue.

MP3 Player Etiquette:

  1. 1.Wearing earphones is like wearing a “do not disturb” sign off your nose.                        Unfortunately, they send a go-away message to others, and it is not appropriate to wear them at work unless you have a deadline to meet and you have cleared it with co-workers.

  2. 2.Turn off your MP3 player and put it in your pocket or purse while attending weddings, funerals, movies, live performances, business meetings, interviews, classes, on dates, and in restaurants, places of worship, and doctor and dentist waiting rooms.

  3. 3.Take note of your surroundings.  Listening to an MP3 player may be appropriate while you are commuting on a bus or reading in a public library, but it may be considered rude at work or when you are in a situation in which others need to communicate with you.  When there is an expectation that you will be meeting or greeting people, leave your MP3 player behind.

  4. 4.If you work in the customer-service industry, do not use an MP3 player.  Customers should not feel that they must interrupt you to get service.

  5. 5.Keep the volume moderate so that no one hears your music coming from your earphones.

  6. 6.Avoid singing along or tapping while listening to the music coming through your earphones.  This can be very annoying to others.

Cell phones must be off while you are in the school building or portable classrooms during the school day.  The exception is at lunch time in the hallways.

Any recording of pictures, video, or audio using a cell phone or any other electronic device is forbidden on school property during the school day unless it is sanctioned by a member of the administration or teaching staff.

Cell Phone Etiquette:

A list of suggestions for demonstrating good manners  when using cell phones

  1. 1.Turn off your cell phone or put it on “vibrate” when attending weddings, funerals, movies, live performances, sports events, business meetings, classes, and dates, and in places of worship, restrooms, restaurants, libraries, museums, and doctor or dentist waiting rooms.

  2. 2.Turn off your cell phone when you enter an airplane or hospital.

  3. 3.Let voice mail take your calls during the time that you are unavailable.

  4. 4.Tell others when you must take a call.  Then excuse yourself and find a secluded place.

  5. 5.Respect the personal space of others by taking your conversation 10 or more feet away from people.  Ideally, take your call in a private space.  Do not obstruct the movement of others while taking a call in a crowded area.

  6. 6.Do not interrupt a personal conversation to take a cell phone call or check voice mail.

  7. 7.Keep private matters private.  It can be embarrassing for others to overhear an emotional conversation.

  8. 8.Use discretion when talking on a cell phone in public.  You never know who may be listening.

  9. 9.Be responsible when placing calls or talking on the phone while driving.  Place calls when the car isn’t moving and use a hands-free device to keep your focus on the road.  Don’t make or answer calls while driving in traffic or hazardous conditions.

  10. 10.If you have a camera option on your phone, do not take anyone’s photo without his/her permission.
