A. GLOSSARY OF TERMS


Academic Excellence: The quality of being an outstanding student achieving a high overall average in the senior grades.


Admission Award:  This is usually an amount of money given to a student by an institution as an incentive to attend a post secondary program there.


Bursary:  A sum of money given to a student primarily on the basis of financial need.  Academic achievement and extra-curricular involvement are sometimes also considered.


Scholarship: A Scholarship is an award of money based on excellence in academic achievement, music or sports.  The financial needs of the applicant are usually not considered in awarding scholarships.


OSAP (ONTARIO STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM): A program through which Ontario residents may apply for government loans. These loans are meant to assist with the basic costs of attending college or university.  OSAP loans are based solely on financial need. Amount awarded is based on the taxable income of the parent(s).

C. TIMELINES FOR AWARDS APPLICATIONS

1. APPLICATION FORMS TO POST-SECONDARY INSTITUTIONS - When you submit a standard admission form you are automatically considered for most awards, but each institution may award a number of scholarships/prizes which require special application forms. (INFO)

1.1 Write away for any out-of-school application forms or print from the Internet. (Oct. - Nov.)

1.2 Ask your counsellor for application forms for specific awards for which you qualify as soon as they are available.

1.3 Review and proofread all submissions carefully.

1.4Send as early as is practical.


2. OSAP

2.1 Applications are available in the spring (usually mid-May) online at http://osap.gov.on.ca

2.2 Send an OSAP application immediately to the post-secondary institution upon your final

acceptance or apply directly on-line through the Internet



3. ALL OTHERS

3.1 A number are advertised by the Guidance Department. Read the printed Guidance and Career Announcements

3.2  Outside of the School.

You must seek these out and bring the application form(s) to your counsellor as early as is practical.

Please note the deadline dates are based on previous year information.  The due dates may be different this year so please verify all dates.  Requirements and eligibility criteria may also change from year to year.  It is your responsibility to meet all the deadlines and to ensure you are eligible.  Read all instructions carefully.

The University of Toronto National Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate superior academic performance, original and creative thought and exceptional achievement in a broad context.  The National Scholars will be those who not only excel in academic pursuits but also have an enthusiasm for intellectual exploration and an involvement in the life of their school and community.

The Loran Awards  Program (formerly known as Canadian Merit Scholarship Foundation CMSF)  - valued at up to $16, 000 per year  Eligibility Criteria - Successful applicants must: present a minimum 85 academic average, show ability to carry a substantial academic load, possess a strong record of service and leadership either in school or in the larger community, and enter a Canadian university in the academic year after selection. Check the application for a list of eligible universities.

TD Canada Trust Scholarships for Outstanding Community Leadership Program - Approximate value of $60,000. While applicants should be academically capable of entering and successfully completing either college or university, the focus of these scholarships is not primarily on rewarding the highest marks. The key criterion is outstanding community leadership, in balance with the student's personal circumstances and academic performance.  Application Deadline: Oct. 29 in past




December

Burger King Scholars $1000 - One North Park student can be nominated. 

Criteria: - cumulative high school average of 69%, work an average of 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year (part-time year round), applicants are NOT required to be employed at Burger King restaurants, although Burger King employees may be eligible students, demonstrate participation in community service and/or co-curricular activities, demonstrate financial need, can obtain written recommendations and signatures from both school official and employer (neither of whom is related to the student), plan to enroll in a accredited 2 or 4 year college, university, or vocational-technical school no later than the following fall. Millennium Scholarships - Excellence Awards (Canadian Institutions - University or College) up to $20,000 disbursed in annual allotments.   Candidates must be entering their first year of full-time studies leading to a degree, certificate or diploma. Check www.millenniumscholarships.ca

-good citizenship, demonstrated by positive and verifiable service to the community;

-academic achievement

-demonstrated capacity for leadership and ability to motivate others

Wendy's Classic Achiever High School Scholarship Awards - $500-$2000. Awarded to students who excel not only in their studies, but who are also involved in extracurricular activities and community and volunteer service. Qualifying criteria for candidates: 1) be currently in their graduating (final) year of high school 2) have maintained a 70 in their previous year 3) participate in at

Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program - The Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program encourages and rewards graduating high school students who have distinguished themselves through environmental community service, extracurricular and volunteer activities, and academic excellence.

The Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program grants 15 awards of $5000 each annually, to be applied directly towards tuition, books, room and board (where applicable) or other educational expenses for the first year of post-secondary full-time studies in Canada.

Vari Scholarship/Bursary for students interested in becoming secondary school teachers. $10,000 renewable. This scholarship is awarded annually to three students who embody both academic excellence and a proven desire to pursue a future career in secondary school teaching.

Criteria:

Nominees must demonstrate through extracurricular activities a genuine interest and commitment to teaching as a profession.

Nominees must have achieved high academic standing.

Nominees must have completed, or intend to complete, a broad range of courses, and must meet the admission requirements for the stream of study they intend to enter in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto.

Nominees must be registered at Victoria College in the University of Toronto to receive this award.

Nominees must complete the financial statement (part B of application) explaining their financial situation and must be countersigned by a parent or guardian.  Under the terms of the Vari award, financial need must be demonstrated.

Nominees must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada in their graduating year from an accredited Ontario secondary school.

The Hal Rogers Endowment Fund - $1000 The program was established to promote, encourage and sponsor educational programs and activities, by assistance to applicants in their quest for learning at a recognized post-secondary institution.  To be eligible the student must:

Be a Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant

Plan to register as a full-time student, September 2006, at a recognized University, Community College, Technical Institute or other post-secondary institution for advanced learning

Demonstrate high ideals and qualities of citizenship and be involved in their community as a volunteer or through employment or both

The Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program $7000 per year for 4 years

The program provides scholarships to students entering or attending post secondary educational institutions within Canada.  Recipients are selected for their dedication to the humanitarian ideals of Terry Fox, their volunteer experience, their courage in overcoming obstacles, their participation in sport, fitness and community service and their academic standing. The applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant.  Application Deadline:  Feb. 1 in past


University of Guelph President’s Scholarship $26,000 over 4 years

Students in the 85% + range applying to the University of Guelph who have demonstrated leadership abilities in their school and community may seek to be nominated by North Park.  North Park can nominate two students.  One student must be entering a science program and one student must be entering an Arts/Humanities/Social Science program.  Students must be a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident.  Application Deadline:  Feb. 1 in past


University of Guelph Lincoln Alexander Chancellor’s Scholarship $26,000 over 4 years

Students in the 85% + range applying to the University of Guelph who have demonstrated leadership abilities in their school and community may seek to be nominated by North Park (only one student per high school).  Students must an aboriginal person of Canada, or a person with a disability, or a member of a visible minority.  Application Deadline:  Feb. 1 in past


Western’s National Scholarship Program

President’s Entrance Scholarship - up to eleven awards  $30,000 ($6,000 per academic year for 4 years, with the first year of residence room and board included)

Faculty Entrance Scholarship - up to fifteen awards $20,000 ( $4,000 per academic year for 4 years , with the first year of residence room only included)

National Merit Awards  - up to fifty awards valued at $2000 for one year

Carleton University Prestige Scholarships up to $30,000 over 4 years

Student must have an admission average of 90% or better plus demonstrated leadership roles in their extra-curricular activities throughout secondary school.  Application Deadline:  March 1 in past


Hotel - Hospitality University Entrance Scholarships - Any student graduating from high school and applying for admissions into a university hotel-hospitality program in Canada this fall are eligible to apply. Apply online at www.chfscholarships.com   Application Deadline:  March 29 in past


Huron University College National Scholarships  - $10,000 - $20,000 over four years to entering students who display outstanding academic achievement together with a good record of extra-curricular activities.  To be eligible you must have a mid-year average of 90% or higher.  Application Deadline:  March 10 in past


The Miller Thomson Foundation Scholarship - $1000. The Miller Thomson Foundation has been created by the Toronto-based law firm of Miller Thomson. The purpose of the Foundation is to encourage and promote the attainment of higher education goals for individuals who have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement, have made a positive contribution to their school through extracurricular activities, and have made significant contributions of time and energy to community service programs. The James Hillier Foundation Scholarship - Up to $5000/yr (renewable ) Open to Grade 12 U graduates with a graduating average of at least 90 in his/her best six 12U subjects   (including a minimum of two 12U science courses ). The candidate must have been a full-time student for the final three years and a resident of Brant County for three years. The student must signify their intentions of pursing scientific or technological careers and be granted acceptance in a college or university that has an appropriate accredited curriculum. Ontario Knights of Columbus Bursary Program Students may apply for this bursary if a member of their family is in good standing with the Knights of Columbus and have applied to a full time program at college or university.  You must able to demonstrate financial need and service to church and community as well as academic achievement.  Application Deadline: April 15  in past


Ontario Secondary School Teacher's Federation Family Bursary Program - $1,000 OSSTF has established a bursary to assist financially the children of OSSTF members to enter post- secondary

Samuel W. Stedman Foundation Bursary Program - Stedman Bursary Applications are available for graduating North Park students who are applying to post-secondary education. The Stedman Bursaries are intended to assist qualified students who might otherwise be unable to finance a post-secondary education due to extensive financial need. The Brant Artillery Gunners Club, sponsored by the Walter Bourne Bursary Foundation - $1000. The Bursary offers $1000 to a student of each Brantford high school. The Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta Undergraduate Entrance Scholarship to the University of Toronto or the University of Western Ontario - $500 The Scholarships are open to any male or female enrolled at the U of T or UWO starting in September. Phi Gamma Delta will award one scholarship per institution to the applicant who, through academic achievement and extracurricular involvement, demonstrates overall excellence in Scholarship, Leadership and Community Service. Fellowships for Studying in French, Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities - $1500. The Fellowship for Studying in French program was established to encourage Ontario residents to enter full-time post-secondary programs offered in French at French language or bilingual institutions in Ontario. The Grand Valley Educational Society Entrance Awards - $1000. Eligibility: A candidate must reside in Brant County, must have demonstrated good academic achievement and have an offer of admission to Laurier Brantford. Greyhound Canada Transportation Corp. Scholarship Program ATravel is Education Too@ Students with an 80% average or higher may drop off a copy of their transcript at their local Greyhound depot. Hamilton Teachers' Credit Union Limited Community Commitment Awards - $500. One graduating student from each secondary school within The Grand Erie District School Board can apply. Eligibility: a) applicant must have made a contribution to the school in the area of sports, clubs or student government, b) applicant must have made a voluntary contribution to the community at large, c) applicant must have earned average or better grades in their graduating year.   Application Deadline: May 18 in past


The Harry Jerome Scholarships - Range from $1000 - $4000 Eligibility: A student of Black African/Black Caribbean ancestry with: a) high academic achievement b) financial need c) recognized contribution to the Black community and other volunteer activities d) application to a Canadian College/University.  Application Deadline:  May 30 in past


Maurice Izzard Memorial Award will benefit a student with a physical disability who plans to pursue post secondary education at university, college or any other centre of post secondary education.  Value $1000.00.    Application Deadline:  May 30 in past


McMaster University Faculty of Engineering Entrance Scholarship for female students.

Female students must be in their final year of high school with an academic average of 85% and have applied to the Engineering 1 program at McMaster University. $2000.00 value. Application Deadline May 31 in past


Ontario Federation of Labour Scholarship Award $2000. This scholarship is for graduating students attending college or university in the academic year after selection.  They must be a child of a member of a local union affiliated to the OFL.  Applicants must have: superior scholastic ability, community interests and an understanding of the role and significance of the Canadian labour movement.   Application Deadline: May 3 in past


The Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF) - Up to $1000. The OSOTF was established by the Province of Ontario to provide financial support for college and university students in full time programs to begin or continue their post-secondary education. A student must be academically accomplished and in financial need. Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarships - College and University

OSAP – Queen Elizabet II Aiming For The Top Tuition Scholarships - Up to a maximum of $3500 per year. The Dr. Albert Rose Bursary Program  Up to $3000 Available to tenants living in geared-to-income housing in Ontario.  Bursaries will be available to tenants graduating from high school in the current academic year who intend to enroll in full-time post-secondary education program.  Awards are also available for tenants planning to enroll in short-term academic, trade, or skills-based training (Maximum $1000)   Application Deadline:  July 8 in past


The Kiwanis Club of Grand River Endowment Fund - $ Amount Based on Need. The Fund was established through the generosity of the late Dr. J.A. D.
