The Ministry of Education states that when the process and content of learning are disrupted by irregular attendance, both the individual student and his/her classmates suffer a loss of experiences that cannot entirely be regained. Students who habitually miss class will suffer in the evaluation process because they will not have demonstrated that they have met the required expectations for the course.
Therefore, the secondary school attendance monitoring procedure is designed to stress to students the importance of attending school and the resulting consequences of poor attendance. It should be noted that students participating in authorized school-related activities outside the regular class will have that absence recorded as excused.
Students’ learning skills are evaluated on a day-to-day basis. Much of the learning occurs during interaction within the class.
Students often work with partners and in groups for presentations and partner learning. When a student is absent, the class organization is affected.
Quizzes, labs, projects and the development of communication and thinking skills are activities that require the student to be in school.
Daily Absence: Vice Principal or Attendance Secretary will call parents/guardians when the cause for the absence is unknown or needs substantiation. In cases where the student is an adult (18 years of age), communication will be with the student only.
If a student is absent for 15 consecutive school days and has not provided a medical certificate, the student will be removed from the roll.
Students absent from school on the day of a school dance will not be allowed to attend the dance. Students absent from school are not eligible to participate in sports or extra-curricular events on that day.
