CODE OF STUDENT BEHAVIOUR

RATIONALE:

Freedom to learn in a healthy, non-threatening environment is basic to our democratic society. Schools have a duty to ensure that each student’s educational needs are met while fulfilling society’s requirements for order and respect for one another.

Valley Heights Secondary School is a community. It includes young people and adults who share the responsibility for setting and reaching educational goals while working together as caring and contributing members of society.

For a society to function smoothly, guidelines are needed - a code of behaviour. The code is based on:
1. mutual respect,
2. a belief in self-discipline,
3. the recognition of both rights and responsibilities,
4. the desire to maintain order, security of persons and property, and safety for all.

You are responsible to your principal for your conduct on the school premises, or while travelling on a school bus. Our school's reputation is based upon your standard of behaviour at all times.

The following is a summary of the Code of Behaviour established by staff, students, and parents. The Valley Heights School Community Council endorses the Code of Student Behaviour and will not tolerate any physical or verbal abuse to any student or staff member.

The Ministry of Education SAFE SCHOOLS POLICY (2000) supports efforts to enforce that physical, verbal (oral or written) sexual or psychological abuse, bullying or discrimination on the basis of race, culture, religion, gender, language disability, sexual orientation or any other attribute is unacceptable.
